Im going to let my assistant guide the shoot, as it'll be good for his ego We'll take turns shooting and will have plenty of time for discussion between shots.

Im feeling somewhat nervous though - to the point that Id almost rather not go

I think we have the basics covered/discussed, but if anyone has any last minute studio/model/portrait tips Id be glad to hear them.

Don't say thinks like "how about we do some with your fanny out". Avoid words like "Saggy" "wrinkly" "droopy" you get the idea

I reckon apart from that you will be fine.

Seriously though, I empathise with your nerves. I have turned down more than one opportunity to do this kind of thing simply because I'm too much of a wimp!

It seems to me having looked at one or two photographs of ladies, both fully clothed, scantily clad, and on occasion nude this sort of thing will stand or fall based on the backgrounds/props, and to a lesser extent the poses. The most natural and beatufil woman/pose combination will look terrible if it's taken in someones kitchen!

I reckon you will enjoy it! Good luck

...and lighting, makeup and image processing I would say. Any fashion shots I see seem to have spent a week in photoshop, hence women trying to look like something that does not actually exist.

Lighting is probably the most important thing to consider - it gets you away from trying to take photos of a concept (ie. "I want to take a picture of the model in a particular pose wearing a particular outfit" towards looking at the shapes and textures that you're shooting. Photos like this stand or fall on the overall balance and lines.

I've got a friend who's "into" photography and has done a few shoots with friends and models that are frankly terrible because he's more concerned with the idea he's had for a great shot than actually looking at what's in the viewfinder.

Good luck.

Ive also turned down a few requests in the past too. Its work/pics for her, stock images for me. Im sure we'll all get on well and chill it out together setting up the gear and nattering away.

I read that photography was the study of composition and lighting, no more. And lighting skill can only come with practise and experience. Still, her current shots leave a great deal of room for improvement. Even Im confident (with or without ed) I can improve on those, but we'll have to see.

Under no circumstances use the phrase "hamburger shot" or the word "growler"!

A mate and I are meeting a client next week (webdesign not photography) and have agreed to pay eachother £30. This figure goes down by £5 each time one of us mentions the word badger or mushroom. With a max usage of the word badger 4 times and mushroom twice. I'll win, of course

When you're looking through the viewfinder concentrate on composition and shadows...nothing else or it gets too distracting.

I shot F11, 160th. The shoot didnt go too badly. The more we shot the more we all relaxed, and I got some 'half decent' pics for a first ever attempt, but nothing Im at all pleased with. Huge learning experience though! And lots and lots of fun and laughter all round which was great plus the day was nicely topped off with a midnight feast of chips and TVR banter on the brighton seafront watching the local scallywags getting arrested so a good night all round.

Really did open my eyes to the bucket/shead/shit loads there is to learn in all respects, especially about lighting! Its almost a relief to be able to get back to the familiarity of my light tent, which is easier to control and just as much fun.

It was also a very long shoot, and the event for all of us was far more exhausting than I had imagined it would be. Still not keen on parting with money for models as photography is supposed to be an enjoyable money making hobby - but I can appreciate the value of an experienced model with training ie one who can spontaneously create well practised poses and hold facial expressions on demand without suffering from the "deer in headlights" syndrome, as the seconds tick by.

Making her laugh whilst ed was shooting wasnt too hard, but when you're concentrating at the top of a step ladder yourself trying to compose an ever changing scene below... a lot more experience is needed to keep the model constantly grinning, eyes sparkling etc. Ive already deleted over 90% of the 294 photos I took. If you dont get the lights, eyes, facial expression and composition all looking 'ok' you end up with little more than a crap snapshot. She got the shots she wanted, I only wish I could say the same myself. Makes you realise how much work goes into even an average/good shot, let alone a great shot

Respect to Poah and Ed, who have posted far better results than these in the past. No laughing at the back, I've not done any post processing yet either, and if it wasnt for the fact that it was my first shoot Id have deleted all but 3 photos.

I can see dozens of flaws and dont like the idea of trying to make a bad photo look better in PS - would rather have a half decent photo to begin with, especially regarding the lighting. Going to finish with PS elements 3 and install PS CS next week. Any tips on removing wrinkles in PS without the clone tool or spot heal brush? How do you airbrush the skin?

If spotted they're changed. With so many forums I guess some might get missed.

working left to right on the collage

1/ bit slutty IMHO. no need for nudeness in this shot.

2/ taking the photo at too high an angle. could maybe have had less light at the back of the image and less DOF.

3/ looks like she is constipated lol

4/ Quite like this. very erotic. downside is the light nothing really interesting about it.

5/ cropped her legs off other wise nice image, light good as is pose.

6/ arse of a shot lol

not bad to be fair bob

Cheers Poah. I agree with all your comments. She had a problem with holding poses, and said the photographer she worked with previously asked her to change poses every 5 seconds. And she insisted she work this way. The lights didnt move once during the whole shoot (no time. no space. plus the pose changed every 10 seconds) so it was really just a "shoot what you can" affair.

She wanted underwear shots, she needed them for her website, hence the erotic poses. I was asking her to take her hand out of her pants - she has it RIGHT down there which I thought was a bit ott

If you could bottle and sell that 'instinctive knowing' which tells you where something somewhere is going on, you'd be the wealthiest man on PH
