Can you order the CS pack and not have the rear rollcage fitted ? Is it a dealer fit or factory fitted. My dealer says yes but reading the literature seems to suggest only harness/fire extinguisher can be fitted later on... Quite fancy idea of keeping lightweight CS seats only. Thanks in advance.

Got my dealer to check exactly this question for me with factory a few weeks ago for same reasons (cage weighs same as seats save). Factory absolutely insist on fitting rollcage - but you dealer will be able to remove it!

True - but then you won't get the 'free' (ha ha) cage, extinguisher belts etc.

But you just said you don't want the cage, so all you've got for free is a fire extinguisher (which no-one fits) and one 6-pt harness (which can no longer be attached to anything)..........

Sorry mate - you missed that I was having a sarcastic dig at Porsche's supposed 'no cost' sports pack!

Thanks all for replies. My reason for removing the rear rollcage is not just weight alone but (a) I prefer these seats over the leather racing seats (b)as most of the time the car will be for road use (v track) wanted to keep the rear clear for: (i) storage space and (ii)give a clearer view for the rear view mirror.

My only concern is that if the dealer can remove it: will it cost money and will removal create a whole of creaks/groans as original trim is taken out and refitted ?

Your other objectives are reasonable, but put no weight on concerns that the cage obstructs the view to the rear. It is an irrelevancy.

With respect to weight reduction, what little a cage might cost you in fuel mileage and acc/dec you more than make up for in extra torsional stiffness.

Flemke - thanks so the cage just makes the rear mirror view redundant - is that right ?

Cages don't interfere significantly with the rearward view in my opinion.

Surely all you need to do is spec. the car with the bucket seats, they may be leather but still have grippy alcantara centres & look better than fabric club sport ones! Then you can keep the handy door cubby boxes that you loose with the CS pack & save the cost of having the rear cage removed.
It is only worth going club sport if you want, buckets cage & "all" for serious track work!

Correct.
The mirror is not an irrelevancy; the irrelevancy is concern that the mirror's view will be compromised.

Additionally, the cage in the 997 GT3 has the harness bars mounted further back on the cage. This gives much improved access to the rear luggage area. There is no real downside with this cage (appart from the suggestion that it may not be FIA approved, unlike the more obstructive version - this is just deduction from the notes I was given at todays presentation however).

Having seen the presentation and the car today, I'd definitely go for the clubsport. The biggest surprise was the door bins. They've been removed and filled with polystyrene padding, with the lids velcro'd on. We all thought it was a preproduction car issue when that was discovered today, but its actually a safety feature.

flemke - did I see your F1 on the road near chiswick today? It was an F1 in a curious blue, although more purple than I thought yours was.

Cheers all. This had helped me make my mind: keep the order as is and keep the CS pack with roll cage fitted. Rear view not too blocked and some modest access to rear as well.

Dan H - what was the Porsche Reading event all about - this was in addition to Thruxton ? Or was it a special event for potential 997 GT3 RS owners ?

Thanks again

It was a day organised by Gary Bullen of GT3 Titanic fame, along with some PCGB members.

Yes, I discovered that too.It seemed very preproduction to me but as you say apparently not. It's going to be a permanent source of embarrasment with passengers tugging the 'lid' off all the time. Think I'll glue mine down! Didn't think luggage was an issue either. Bit of 'posting' of soft bags through the cage no great hardship.
