I am about to change my engine oil and this subject has been very sticky with Mobil 1 and bore scoring

So lets have a survey what we use ...

I was intending to go to Silkolene Pro R 15W-50 a slightly thicker synthetic oil than mobil one

I use Mobil 1 in everything I own, even the lawnmower. I do all my own engine work and the only failure I've had in 20 years of using Mobil was a broken valve spring on a 16 year old 7.6 litre Oldsmobile with 150 1/4 mile runs and 30 bottles of Nitrous on it. You can debate the issue if you want, but the fact is: Bore scoring is caused by an over rich carburetor, not an oil brand.

Since as Mobile one moved to 0/40 or their abouts (In UK) I won't even run it in my 2 litre turbo engine as its too runny! I used to use it all the time until the change.

I use Kendal 15/40 in my chevy as its running a solid lifter cam, with the hydraulic cam the better choice would be 20/40. It's good quality but hard to find as its a US oil.

Haven't seen it here in the States. We've got 5w 30, 10w-30, 15w-50 and special bike oils in Mobil 1. I wouldn't use the 0 either.

Valvoline racing. Wouldn't touch anything else on a relatively 'old' design V8

Yep, I agree with the choice and the principal!

My tuppence worth -

I have used Mobil 1 in my race car (1600 genuine ENGLISH 213BHP 9500RPM) and it turns it to water in one practice/race. Oil temperatures read about 130 degrees C in the sump.

Valvoline racing 20/50 is MUCH better but a bit thick for such a high revving engine and results in fairly high oil temperatures. I expect on a much lower revving and less stressed V8 it would be perfect.

For info I have moved to a lighter redline racing oils and been very impressed. I will be trying a Purple Oil racing oil as they claim I could use an even lighter grade without blowing it out the breather, we shall see. I obviously wouldn't recommend a GENUINE race oil without talking to the manufacturer first.
