I read this on a local website and was wondering do Special Constables really have this power?

"You are right Mike...I am extremely passionate about bringing speeding motorists to book. I lost 3 good friends in the last 5 years and on all 3 counts they were pedestrians. One was hit by a car as he was one step away from safety next to the kerb of the pavement when the idiot driver took his life from him in an instant. The second was hit as he was cycling and the driver's excuse..."well I did not see him!" The third was hit on a zebra crossing.
Now before anyone says these cars were driving ultra fast let's get this bit correct. All three cars were being driven at the limit of 30 mph at the time in a residential area.
Mike as I have commented to Yve...if you have a major concern...and it sounds as if you have, go to Bourne police station and leave your details for the Sector officer who runs the Special Constabulary. They have FULL police powers in every area of policing and speed work is a vital service that they do for residents trying to battle against inconsiderate motorists. Look at the results reported in the Local a few weeks ago regarding the 39 motorists caught on Mill Drove in a 12 hour period. This was done as a result of a massive set of complaints by the Mill Drove residents whose concerns to Lincolnshire Highways and the County council frankly fell on stony ground. I now understand that the total on Mill Drove caught since Easter is over 50!
I totally endorse your comments about throwing the book at these drivers and letting them feel the full weight of the law. I'll say it again and again. If drivers are prepared to break the LAW then they MUST be prepared to accept the consequences of being caught and face the law's authority without question"

Special Constables have all the powers of professional constables in their own force area and those force areas that border their own force area.

The chap quoted seems to be on a bit of a quest. If I was his Superior Officer I'd want to have a chat with him.

Round here our CSO's think they have the same full powers as regualr police and specials. Their job is mainly to tackle bad parking bad driving and generally behave like they own the world and we should all bow down to them. They clearly havent learned that respect is earned not enforced...

Have to say this has made life difficult for me. I have had to explain to my kids (8 and 6) that there are police (the good guys, always find one if you get lost etc.) and there are people that LOOK like police but arent. The CSO's are unhelpful in ANY given situation and are to be avoided. I have told the kids to treat them as a 'stranger' and not talk to them. I live in hope that one of them will turn up at one of my parties one day so I can turn them away.... I would put CSOs one rung below estate agents and traffic wardens.....

OOps I've been ranting havent I . Sorry.....

er, but these drivers were not breaking the speed limit. They may well have been driving too fast for the conditions, but the speed limit didn't help, did it?

We obviously weren't meant to notice that. Do enough ranting and the original lack of justification is obscured in the false conclusions built on it.

So such a special constable has all the authority of a normal police officer but can follow his own agenda based on an unsubstantiated personal vendetta. Nice we're so well protected.

Agreed, Police officers should leave their prejudices at the door, or at the very least rely on common sense rather than mindless bias. If they're incapable of that, they're doing the wrong job.

Yep a wee bit OTT for my liking but if you read the other forums then it could be understandable. The editor is not prone to letting comments on his board other than those he approves or are ones of his "friends"
