was working fine on other PC using XP pro. Now using XP Home - does that make a difference?
It makes a huge diference. XP home doesn't support dynamic disks at all.
Can you boot into XP pro off the old disk, then do this...

will that lose all my data? I could reload xp pro, but apparently it was a pirate copy. Not too far into reloading pc, so can I reload dodgy xp pro onto c drive, do that thingy above, then format c and reload xp home?
It should be OK.
If the data is really important, you could wipe your new drive, partition it in two, install your dodgey XP pro on partition 0 , hook up your old drive, drag the contants onto the second partition, then do the convert on the old drive. then reinstall new windows on the first partition, and check the old drive is accessible.
This is really messy and crap, but will work, and is pretty safe as long as you're carefull.
I'd wait untill tommorow though. Hopefully one of the daytime crowd will have come accross this before and might have a better workaround.

LH Column shows disk1 as dynami and foreign RH column blank
Right click, 'import foreign disk'. Should be it.
sorry to be sceptical, but "should" isn`t good enough !!!
I am in deep deep doodoo if I lose this data.
can you be more positive?!!?
The worlds your oyster, go for it?
The only reason I said 'should' is because sometimes after importing the disk, you additionally have to assign a drive letter but usually it does it for you. If a disk is partitioned as a dynamic disk rather than a basic disk you will allways have to import it when you put it in another machine. If you've got a complicated setup with software RAID you have to think about what you're doing a bit, but if you just want to get the files off an otherwise simple dynamic disk just import it.
