Hi Chaps, I know this subject has been covered in other threads but I need a bit of extra info!

To start off with I thought the occational clunking from the rear was the fuel tank vacuum thing. But recently I have noticed the noise a little more frequently. It seems to occur when the car goes from deceleration to acceleration or visa versa. For instance, from reverse to 1st, or just if I take my foot off the accelerator in a low gear then accelerate again.

I've read various threads and it sounds like the Diff bushes could be the culprits. I realise there are a few other things it could be (the actual diff, suspension, cv joints etc) but I'm starting with the easier stuff.

As I'm still waiting for my (Steve Heath) bible to arrive, my question is, how easy, and how do I go about checking the diff bushes, tightening them, same goes for cv joints, and any other obvious stuff.

This is coming from a reasonably practical guy, with a decent set of tools and some car mechanics experience, but none under the car (apart from brakes), just under the bonnet!!

it's up for a service in 700 miles (which will be next week or two probably!) so maybe I'll wait, rather than going all vigalante on the car!!

Sounds almost identical symptoms as I had with my Chim.

The bolts holding the driveshafts in the diff came loose and eventually fell out with a couple shearing off. Left me stranded.

Suggest you have a look asap, if it's the same you may end up damaging a driveshaft.

Yes but you need to get right under and also have a feel . A set of prybars are useful to see if anything is moving that it shouldn't be.

Cheers guys, Like i said it's up for a service in (now) 600 miles. But I'd like to have a nose round just for peace of mind.

So I presume everything is pretty accesable from underneath, just have a good feel round and see whats what seems to be the plan!

p.s. up nice and early Mr.Heath!

I've got a similar thing on my 1993 4.3. I get a clunk when I engage 1st gear from stationary. Its almost like the gearbox moves backwards as the gear is engaged. This happens without letting the clutch up.

Had it on my S2 and I'm trying to remember whether or not it went away when I replaced the propshaft bearings......

Hmm
