Hi all -

I need some advice please on how to get a laptop fixed.

Does anyone know of any reliable diagnosis / repair businesses in the Beds / Herts / Bucks area ?

I have an AJP 5600 model laptop ....

It seems to have intermittent probs with booting up (often crashes ) - crashing after being booted up , warnings about "low battery" even when run on the mains ( and it won't run on the mains without the battery inserted - which it should be able to do ).

I'm not sure fi there are some problems with the mother board perhaps ?

Any advice gratefully received on reliable and economic repairers ( the manufacturers are asking £100 to "have a look" , then suggesting it could be £400+ for any work on the motherboard )

If it's more than a few years old, perhaps more worthwhile to buy a new one.

If you have to pay someone to look, prob. not cheap.

Its 3 years old, cost about £1500 and has a good spec. - so I'm rather reluctant to scrap it........ unless I could find another good laptop for £500 ish ( ? )

might be worth looking for your current laptop on e-bay to find out what it would cost to replace like-for-like. That'll put the possible cost of repair into context. The faults you describe might be something as simple as a poor solder joint somewhere near the laptop's power supply gubbins or it might be impossible to pinpoint in which case the repairer will start swapping out big chunks of the machine until it starts working (the value of this approach is clearly capped by, amongst other things, the e-bay price you might find).
