Dom,

Did I get it right from another thread that the Red Baron has a new custodian. Or did I get the wrong end of the stick?

It could be curently resting in my Lizard lair.............................................................

The only problem is that its not... Boo!

I do have visting rights to it now, & hoping to trash it around on the Oulton track day but alas it is not mine.

I'm sure Dom will reveal all....

Hi Don,

Yes, as from the end of the week, the Red Baron should be sold to my technician, who loved cleaning the badger droppings from the sills so much he made me an offer. I needed to sell to free up some money for a house deposit... but more of that in a second.

Luckily, the sale means it is still 'kept in the family', as my tech is a good friend of myself and Iguana, and known to a few other PHers. He will be fettling the Baron even more than I had a chance to, and it should be quite something when finished. I should also be able to drive it occasionally, including the Oulton RS trackday, insurance allowing.

The reason for the house, was 1) a move up the property ladder, but 2) necessary for my next car purchase... and the only thing on the planet I would replace the 964RS with was an Ultima GTR.

So the house has a nice big garage, and delivery of a GTR chassis should take place in the next few months.

As for a sensible car for getting around, and to entertain me before the GTR gets built, I have opted for a friend's BMW E36 3-series coupe, which has an 840i V8 powering it, plus a few Schnitzer mods. It sounds lovely - the kind of V8 snarl that melts in the ears

All the best and maybe see you at VW?

Definitely an historic day on this forum.

Long live the Red Baron Hoonstermobile.

(What colour are you going to paint the Ultima?)

I did offer Dom my early 944 at a knock down rate, but for some reason he declined.

I know its worth less than a round of drinks whith his media chums down at the Ivy, but poor old Percy Porsche was most distressed and I now have to console the poor thing

...it's not so bad, as I'll still be able to slip into those triple-tone shell seat Recaros from time to time, and go on the odd sortie... it is no slur on the Baron to say that there is no current production sports car that I could have considered after it, at least within my budget.

If Ultima temptation hadn't seduced me, I may have considered a 993RS, but not sure the price difference would have been worth it. An F355 would have sounded nice and looks pretty, but not up there with the RSs in my book, for focus and agility. And a Noble was just too untried and untested.

To start comparing a 24k Porsche with these 40k+ cars, shows the kind of opinion I have of it. Only car for the money that comes close (IMHO) is a Caterham Superlight R, but I have owned a couple of sevens and they are a bit on the exposed side if you go badger worrying

Money no object, I would have liked a 996tt for my everyday car, and an F40 for the weekends, but my new house would cost less than those two

Oh yes, and Iguana's 944 was obviously on the cards, but I spent the allocated budget on a round of drinks in Soho one evening

Iguana

Don't mention knock down rate. The badger is still recovering from whiplash!

Iguana if you got my mob number can you give me a ring.

Dom, if it doesn't snow Sunday come for a ride in the SLR - if nothing else it'll reacquaint you with the experiences of putting a lot of horesepower through the rear wheels with no form of traction control...experience you'll need with that 300bhp Beemer, let alone an Ultima

BTW who is your Porsche tech?

Ahhhh. So all becomes clear. The Red Baron has gone to a new home but you have visiting rights and the opportunity (and space!) to build an Ultima GTR.

Sad that its left your care but the Ultima - what a challenge and what a car. May you enjoy the build process thoroughly - and enjoy driving it even more!

I hope to come along to VW for a bit this coming Sunday so I might indeed see you there.

At the PCGB trackdays I went to last year there was a silver Ultima moving seriously quickly in amongst 996TTs Met the chap who owned it at Brands - nice chap, very unassuming, very quick!
