rev limiter???

well i could be putting myself up for a laughing at for not thrashing my wedge, but do they have a limiter???

I always change at a maximum on 5500 RPM if im being heavy on the loudness....i havent dared going any further.....

If the have got one, where does it kick in???

Not usually. Mine has an aftermarket one that can be set wherever you like. 6200 looks good

Mines set in my mind at 5000 due to the fact that not enough fuel is getting there after that point, so don't want to cause a meltdown

But 5000 in 5th = over 70 and still quite quick through the gears, enough to frighten the old grannies out there

The engine wear rises quite dramatically towards the top of the rev range. In performance terms there isn't much point going over 5500 or so with a typical cam.

TBH there should be very little need to go beyond 5500rpm anyway, if you look at the gearing on my Chim, which although its a t5 box and GKN diff the ratios aren't a million miles out from a Wedge, at 5500rpm I'm travelling at
1st gear 37mph
2nd 56mph
3rd 81mph (70mph is 4750)
4th 108mph
5th 148mph

If memory serves the hotwire ECU's have a (rather harsh) rev limiter at 6250, although I may be wrong.

Torque is good, that's why you have a V8

I think the standard lifters start to pump up at over 5.5K, and anyway, thats around peak power for the hotter Wedges. Also, the tacho may be inaccurate - mine over reads by c. 300 rpm at 6K.

Had mine [1986 350i Flapper] upto 7000 rpm on occasion, mainly tunnels in Germany. Of course, now that I have replaced the headgaskets and fixed the manifold leaks she don't much like it over 5500.

I'm after one, and if I go for the Hotwire ECU then I'll get a rev limiter?

it's not that i intend to bounce off it, but the security is good. It's the difference between getting the throttle stuck wide open (as does apparently happen sometimes, on the carpets) and jerking a bit, compared to lunching the luvverly v8.

So, bump for clarity. Do all hotwires have a limiter?

Yes, but not always set to the same rpm. And if the ECU has been chipped, the rev limit could have been set anywhere.

i think the hotwire system has a rev limiter in the ecu and comes in at around 6000rpm if this is to high for you get a mark adams ecu chip and ask him to lower it say to around 5750rpm the car will pull better ,run better ect with one of his ecu chips aswell i beleave money well spent as even then if you start to modifiy the car all you pay for is a the first chip and if you wont him to do a rolling raod thats at extra cost
