Hi

I may need to transfer a few clients' domain names to our preferred registrar (Register1.net) as some of the other registrars don't allow MX records and the like to be set (which I consider to be utterly crap incidentally).

What is the usual process for doing this? I'm particularly interested in:

(1) How long it usually takes

(2) Does it involve any downtime for the domain

Thanks in advance,

roadie.

very variable im afraid, depends on the isp your comming from, and their level of inteligence

(2) Does it involve any downtime for the domain

Depends if you changing things like name servers and the actual web site location at the same time. If you can set both things up in parallel you can get away with it..

Thanks in advance,

roadie.

Not that helpfull i suppose im sure someone will be along with a more technical answer later

Depends more on who it's currently with and who it's currently registered to in my experience.

There are several safeguards in place to stop fraudulent transfer of domains, so it can be a bit of a PITA. Just get register1 onto it, they'll know who it's with now, and the best way to move it from that particular registrar.

If you're not actually moving the site then there shouldn't be any downtime.

If it's from a company made of the letters 2 U and K you're going to be royally rogered up the A**E for £16 per domain just to leave, and have to send faxes etc etc.

No downtime should ever be needed however.

.uk domain you simply need to have the IPS Tag changes to ours

all other domains, an email is sent to the listed ADMIN email contact for the domain.
They need to click a link in the email and APPROVE the transfer.
Once they APPROVE the transfer the current REGISTRAR has 7 days in which to DENY the transfer before it is automatically accepted.

Transfer could take 5 mins, transfer could take 5 weeks (if the current people keep denying it! but they have to actively DENY it which makes them mean!)

Thanks Jamie that's very helpful. I might play around with a few of my own domains and see what challenges I have!

Be carefull. Do not play with domains unless you really know what you're doing, or have domains you don't care about.

I dont see why,

transfers are a passive process, there are no active changes made during a transfer, only who is responsible for your billing.

To clarify, I have about twenty or so domains currently registered, not all of which are active and not all of which are with Register1. I'll use some of the ones I don't care about to get some practice in and try a few things.

One more question Jamie if I may, is there a limit to how many sub-domains can be configured for a domain held by Register1? The limit with Easily seems to be three, but I haven't seen any such limit with Register1?

With VDSPro it's 100.

Cheers. I don't think I have 100 then as I've just bought the domain name I'm thinking about through Register1, nothing more at this stage. I have already creayed four sub-domains and don't think I need any more but would still be interested to know what the limit was.

VDS Pro has no limit, but we have to 'set' it to a number, so 100 is just what I chose, it can be raised at any time upon request.

Standard Domains with free DNS can also have as many subdomains added to the DNS as they wish.

That's very impressive Jamie and thanks for posting.

FYI: We buy all our (non-bizarre!) domains through Register1 now and the virtual and dedicated server offerings are definitely in the back of my mind for future client requirements. We use two datacentres in the North of England at the moment and tend to use co-location services rather than hosting (i.e. we buy and have access to the hardware) but I'm quite interested in the high bandwidth allowances you offer for a relatively low monthly fee. We might be using as much as 1TB per month by the end of the year which is not cheap with our current provider so you'll probably be hearing from me at some point.

No worries, come join the hundreds of other PH'rs with Hosting and Servers

Colo is ok.. but it leavs all the responsibility and stress on you, PSU goes pop and takes out your CPU and HDD, you need to dig into your pocket to find one ASAP, Drive to the DC, install it, and hope it doesnt go POP again Rentals = I goto my safe, pull out a spare and slot it in.. it goes POP again, I just pop your HDD into a spare box

One of the main reasons we didn't go with your hosting is that we have a medium-term and onwards requirement for a very large amount of HDD space since the nature of the service is backing-up other people's data. We were looking at a SATA array (containing 12-16 HDDs depending on which model is chosen) to achieve this and since it's a relatively specialist requirement there is no such option in your online application process. Can you support this kind of requirement on a one-off basis or do you have to stick to your more common deployments?

Thanks,

Lee.
