HI guys, i know there have been many threads on here about brakes and upgrades. But i need a little more technical info.

I have a 1995 N 400 which has the old 240mm vented front discs.

I want to have some upgrades either from Hi-spec or by buying bigger (later Ford discs and calipers.)
Hi-Spec do a big disc conversion which retains the standard calipers, but the last time i spoke to them they wanted to know the exact original brake type.

Are the 240mm brake setups from a Escort or Sierra, if so which model, and which bigger ford items can i buy as a bolt on upgrade?

Part numbers or precise info would be good.

I have fitted the stainless lines all round and have drilled discs currently, but my new wheel purchase makes me want a bigger disc up fron for aesthetics more than anything.

Please help if you can.

All Griff and Chim models are the same front Sierra uprights,so all upgrades will have to be compatible with these unless you go aftermarket callipers that need custom brackets.
You will be 100% safe if you quote Sierra Cossie rwd ,thats what I always quote ordering anything hub related.

Hi, I've got Sierra RWD Cossie, "common" Sierra 1.6 RWD and TVR Chim uprights for reference purposes - and the Chim uses a modified "common" Sierra upright, not the Cossie one.

The Cosworth RWD upright is very different, for instance it has threaded holes in the casting itself to take the caliper mount bolts rather than M10 clearance holes as used in the Chimaera!

Your options are:

1 - 260mm Sierra discs/calipers ( same as Escort RS Turbo "series two" )
2 - Calipers off the GRANADA Scorpio Cosworth V6 ( 5 stud, not the 4 stud "Ford Scorpio" ), matched to Sierra Cosworth RWD 283mm discs. I have sold this setup in the past, to get a perfect fit you need to get the disc O.D. reduced to 278mm (same as Granada). If you are willing to drill your upright's mounting holes out to 12.2mm you can use the much more common V6 Mondeo/V6 Cougar/V6 Scorpio (4 stud) calipers, these have M12 bolts....
3 - The WMS 283mm kit as used by a certain Chim racecar at the moment! There's only ONE left in stock as of today (they will of course be restocked!), see here for photos: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dl

Hope that helps!

Keri

PS, I THINK the rear brakes you want are off the Escort/Sierra 4x4 cossie, but I can't swear by that.....

Sorry I stand corrected
I know when I order wheel bearings both front and rear,I ask for sierra cossie rwd and there a fit, from having a quick glance at the upright the calliper centres seemed to be the same?

Yup, late Ford stuff is all the same caliper mount centre-centre (mostly!), just the bolt sizes vary...

as above either get granada 24v cossie front calipers or sierra cosworth 4x4 front calipers and use a 283mm 2wd siera cosworth disc.

or you could just fit 2wd xr4i discs and calipers giving you a 260mm disc rather than the 240mm (basically the same as the later chims & griffs)

for the rear as said if they use a vented disc ( i know later cars do not sure about the eariler ones) then there from a Sierra 4x4 cosworth or Escort Cosworth (basically the same)

a number of companies do ungrades for these cars that use the standard caliper and a spacer and a larger disc with an aluminum bell

for mine i'm tempted to go with the 305mm ally bell option (abotu £250) and source some granny cossie/for sierra 4x4 cossie fronts and fit the 2wd cossie 283mm disc.

superb responses guys, anymore - keep em comin.

Has anyone tried the Hi-SPec Big Disc conversion, the one with the supplied flange to bolt your existing calipers onto? i think the discs are 285mm.

Thats the one i want... did you say they were restocking? Also are the rotors grooved and/or do they come in a drilled option?

Also would they utilise the standard vertical threaded stainless lines i have or would i need to get the banjo type?

Cheers again

I'd be quite interested in the outcome of this thread, as have some four-pot Hi-Spec billet-a-like calipers and some 285mm drilled(I know...!)discs sitting in my garage that I've been (very gently) investigating trying to fit to the front of the Chim...
The whole kaboodle came off my late Capri, but so far it seems the discs won't be of any use, and neither Hi-Spec nor any dealers I've asked have any idea about what brackets would be needed to fit the calipers to the Chim uprights correctly. Shame, as there's nothing wrong with them. The standard fit brakes are adequate for now, but I've some engine diddling on the cards and think it might be prudent to address the stopping too...

Hmmm, i am wondering that... i've just noticed a crack on my NS rear drilled disc.

Any problem with grooves?

How long did the hi-spec items take to arrive, i hear they always have a lead time on manufacture? They look great btw. are the discs grooved and did you have a choice?

I ordered them from TVRparts the guys there were very helpful I explained what I was after and they suggested, these parts. I received them within 10days, and it took a morning to fit,
it would of been less but one of the pipe connections had previously been cross threaded and I could not get the braided hose to connect, after faffing around for about 2 hours with a needle file I managed to get the joint together correctly.
I got grooved discs because of the cracking problem.
I had previously experienced brake fade but these are a lot better.
I know the original brakes are sufficient but IMHO I think high performance cars should have brakes that look the biz, thats probably why TVR now fit 4 pots as standard,

Scaramouch,

One kit left... :-)

The lines are specific to this kit, your old ones won't work I'm afraid. Grooves are available as an option, they are a bit extra and take a little while to have done... Drilled discs are NOT an option! :-)))))

Email me if you want the last kit! If not we will be restocking in the near future anyway..

Does this kit on ebay fit under the standard alloys?

How much extra are the grooved discs? What advantage do grooved disc have over standard?
