Can anyone tell me if there is a temporary speed limit in force between J16 & J17 of M4 at Swindon?

I went through a speed camera doing 70mph along with everyone else. I swear that I did not see any speed restriction signs or I would have slowed down. However, hard shoulder was coned off and I noted 50mph signs in ditch by side of motorway after the camera. No signs on main carridgeway though. All three lanes were open...time 5.00pm

i noticed a similar situation there yesterday, the roadworks not properly signposted with speed restrictions (when joining from J16)...

I wouldnt worry too much unless you were flashed

I think I was flashed unfortunatly......everything else on the motorway was doing at least 70mph so no-one else thought a speed limit was in force.

And unfortunately it's going to be a little tricky to get pics of the signs in the ditch, what with it being a motorway Good luck if you have to fight it.

i'd just argue it anyway - if the speed limit isnt clearly signed and repeated then you can argue...

Don't know about that, but this morning there was a scamera van on one of the bridges between Junctions 12 and 13 of the M4 watching the eastbound traffic. Never seen one there before so be careful, they're getting nearer!

I travel the M4 nearly every day and they seem to have employed a system of 'heads or tails' pot luck when choosing the speed limits in the many coned sections.

Some are 40, some 50 and some stay at NSL. Coned sections with no work taking place may be 50, but further along where work men are on the hard shoulder it may be 70. So a complete lottery and farce!

There are Gatso's near jnct 19 and a 50 limit, but I'm 99% sure the one between 16 and 17 was removed weeks ago. There is still a 50 limit in place for two short sections I believe, but no work men and like you say the average speed slows to around 70 for that 50 stretch.

The Gatso used to be half hidden behind a bridge support, are you sure you saw one? The biggest danger on that stretch is the scamera van that frequents the bridges regularly for an easy ££, it doesn't come any easier for them than there. I think to myself 'watch the bridges' all the time untill I'm obsessed with it, but they can still catch me out when I have a momentary lapse into 'normality' and slip back upto the mid 80's which is the average bar there.
