Trying to boot to an extended partition running windows here from Ubuntu as the primary booting OS.

I keep getting some flipping executable error or something along those lines, which I can't recreate at the minute and tell you whats in menu.lst as it's stressing me..

Can anyone tell me what I should be using in GRUB menu.lst to boot from an extended partition?

Thanks!!
Dave.

Hmm, don't think windows will like that. I think you have to use either map or mapnoverify to virtually move the windows partition.

this guy seems to be trying to do the same thing

I saw that link before...
How easy would it be to move the Windows partition?? Or would it be possible for me to change the boot order so XP boots as normal, then I can add linux to boot.ini as a second OS...

Sounds easier Sort of!

I doubt you can boot anything but windows from boot.ini (not that I've ever tried)

has much effort gone into setting both OS's up yet? much stuff to loose?

Is the 'executable error' coming from GRUB or windows?

BTW, I'm certain it is possible, just a matter of getting the write to partitions swapped over in the windows menu option.

Having the menu.lst and partiton layout would help

I can't get you menu.lst from here, I can tell you what I was trying to run but it'd be easier if you could tell me

XP is installed on Partition 5 I can tell you that..
and AFAIK you can run Linux from boot.ini but involves a lot of fiddling.

Windows I do not want to lose - I need to keep that partition in tact.. But I can reinstall Ubuntu if needed I suppose

Ahh, but I can't quite remember how

Different question, does the windows partition have the ntldr etc. or was it somewhere else

Looking at the docs I don't think you can map partitions around, only drives which is what my setup used to be (and probably what I was thinking of)

I have no idea any more

I am actually quite suicidal now, but I'm packing it in for the night..

Is there any way to move an extended partition to change it to a Primary partition?

I bloody well hope so
(Posted another thread to ask this)

Thanks!
Dave.
