996 3.4 or 3.6
Discussion
Its a good question, having had a 3.4 & a 3.6 I would say spend the extra.
Remember its not just the engine, which is smoother & a little more powerful (esp mid range) With the 3.6 upgrade the 911 received a raft of enhancements to the aerodynamics, interior, exterior styling along with too many other tweaks to mention effectively making it a much better car all round.
The 3.6 just feels like Porsche went over the whole car & improved it, not dramatically in any area but evolved it into a better car. All IMO of course.

One more voice to the chorus...the 3.6 is definitely worth the extra.
I currently own a 3.4 and have driven 4 3.6's in the past couple of weeks with a view to updating; they're unquestionably a little more powerful in the grunt department, and it looks to me like the interiors are a little sturdier/more hard-wearing.
Happy tyre-kicking!
