Is it possible to post a poll on PH?

Anyway, yes, this is the oldest chestnut of them all , but it'd be interesting to know what a representative sample of UK aircooled Porsche owners are running these days, especially as its service time again. I'm still on fully synth in a 964, especially as the car sees the track/'ring from time to time.

Magnatec is tempting - a bit cheaper, a bit thicker, sticks to components at start-up (or is that a gimmick), but I don't like the idea of the oil shearing, or whatever, during track driving. What about high ester stuff?

Hope you kept your Halfords receipt, Hoges senior.

I use Mobil 1 0-40 in the winter, 15-50 in the summer and on track days. Change it every 2 track days as it's cheap insurance.

Mobil 1 not sure of the grade, though I'd really like to try a fully ester based oil, like Silkolene Pro. My indie couldn't get hold of any at the last service though.

Magnatec currently but going for a 24K soon...? the same ? Mobil 1. Johnny, did you get your shocks done? If so, what did you do? Mine are dead and I've got the Bilstein/M030 spring/ARB kit i.e. euro sport sussie retro fit coming from Gert.

My OPC and JZ Machtech both recommend Castrol variants for my '88 and '73 'air-cooled' cars.

Mobil 1(0W)can be problematic in older engines.

Normally use Mobil 1 'motorsport' 15/50 as it's thicker than the 0/40 Mobil 1 which tends to give clouds of blue smoke on startup if I've left the car for 4 days or more in between drives (I know, should drive every day...)

Currently running Magnatec though since that's what my indie put in at the service. Should have asked beforehand and supplied my own oil, I know... Will get it swapped out for fully synthetic next oil change.

Hi Hugh! How's it going?
Sounds good..that's a factory sport option, then?
I have unfortunately still not done mine..I'm steering around every pothole! I have a 12k service due asap at motortune, and I guess he'll be able to get a good deal on some Bilstein HD's. However my stock units (Monroe?) have lasted pretty well.
..this service is probably going to include the engine out for clutch and oil leaks (and all the other stuff that'll need doing ), so I might have to look at the cheapest option!

Cyberface, I have the 15-50 M1 in just now, but not sure whether its such a good idea for Scottish winters. Where do you buy it?

There have been a number independent test recently on oils. Lets just say I was surprised at the results for M1.

I've always been able to find it at one of the two local Halfords stores, oddly enough!

Hmm, I have to get mine from an obscure bugatti specialist via ebay! I'll have a closer look at our local halfrauds.

Lots of fully synth still going on..so the question remains is it more protective than semisynth for the hard-driven modern aircooled porsche? Ultaviolet, could you expand on the M1 test surprise to which you refer?

993 turbo - Mobil 1 5W-40. Tried 0W-40 and the top end went all leaky on me.

JZ seem to recommend it for any year, despite the great big mobil 1 sticker on the engine cover...
