speedo wiring........need help
Discussion
Thanks for the reply Rich,
I have a white faced Speedo (think 1996)
(I have no plug as I bought the dials on there own)
Green-12Volt I know the 3 wires are these where do they go
Black-ground
Yellow -input
Looking from the back of the dial
I I
I I connections .........where do they go?
----
At present I have No Speed Sensor fitted.
I do have another Rover 5-speed gearbox with the electrical speed sensor
that has only 2 Wires
Where do these go?
How do I connect the 2 wires from the sensor to the 3 wires on the speedo?
Can I fit this Rover gearbox sensor to match up with my Speedo?

Are you sure you have the rover gear box?.
Thought the T5 box was fitted to all 1998 chims, as is mine.
If reverse is to the right and down you have the T5 box.
In which case the speed sensor is on the rear diff housing.
The sensor has two wires which go into a two pin plug under the car and is usually cable tied to the chassis.
The two wires then come up through the floor underneath the little storage pocket on the back of the centre console.
There is then a second connector under the centre console, again two pin.
The cable then goes along the centre console along the near side and then under the dash and up to the speedo.
The wires from the sensor are black and grey. Black is ground, grey is pulse wire. This changes to yellow at speedo.
There is also a link off the pulse wire that feeds a plastic box with what looks like a frequency to voltage
converter or multiplier circuit which then goes to the engine ECU.
I would imagine that a connection to the gear box is not possible (certainly not if you have the T5 box) and if you could do it the speedo would need to be recalibrated.
Just had a look in the bible and cannot tell you the connections to the back of the speedo, but i'm sure
someone will be alond shortly to tell you. (I dont fancy taking my dash out this morning)
Cheers Paul.

I photographed all my dash wiring when refurbing the dash veneer. Here is the speedo, (shown the right way up):

The wires are black, green and grey which I believe are ground, 12v and pulse respectively. I don't know if my grey wire is the same as your yellow, seems likely. My car's a 93.

Just back from Callander and had a look at the wiring diagrams from the TVR dealer.
I do not have the ecu Black box so it looks like my idea of fitting the
original speed sensor from the back axle is a no go.
Seems the original speed sensor is connected to this BlackBox in the footwell
I did think that the Rover gearbox speed sensor could work IF
I knew how to connect up the wiring
My TVR was a 450 and is/was a 1998 but has had a major rebuild.
It has lost all the original wiring and black box bits in favour of a
simple fuse box with a Weber500 carb etc.
I used the Rover V8 gearbox which fitted and that is why I need some
electrical help with the wiring of the Speedo.
I can e-mail a photos if this helps
Hope someone out there has the answer

Just took some photos of the speedo front and rear and also the Rover SDI V8 sensor
Speedo has wiring as follows
Green-12V supply
Black- Earth
Yellow-speedo signal
SDI sensor has Yellow and Brown wires only
How do I connect the above parts to work?
Remember this is all I have.....ie No ECU or Black Box
Is this possible

I suspect that the SD1 sensor wires will similar to TVR.
Check that one wire from sensor is earth(probably brown) and the other the yellow will be the pulse wire to supply the speedo with a pulse train.
So the speedo will need a 12 volt supply to work. Connect through ignition switch live.
Then an earth wire for the same reason.
The yellow is the pulse wire from the sensor. So connect yellow from sensor to yellow on speedo.
Hopefully you should get a reading on your speedo, how accurate it will be is another question.
Hope this helps

Was hoping it would be that......a simple matter of
connecting up the yellow wire from the gearbox or diff sensor to the yellow
on the speedo.
I already have the +ve feed from the ign sw and an earth.
When I spoke to the chap at Callender (dreadnaught TVR) he pulled out wiring diagrams which showed that the wires were routed into the ECU BlackBox.
It was this that made me think it was more than a simple connection of 2 yellow wires.
I was thinking of having a trial fit and spinning the sensor up with a drill
but not sure if I'd damage anything.
I think you can get different drive gears for the gearbox which would
alter the speedo reading.
Fingers crossed

Sounds like a good idear with the drill.
The only harm you can do is if the 12 volt wires are connected up wrongly at
the speedo.
The pulses in the TVR setup also supply the ECU to tell it whether the car is moving or not
for tick over and over run adjustment.
On mine however ther was a small black box which was in parallel with the pulse wire
and this may have been the adjustment for different speedo's and/or sensors.
Great these TVR's dont think any one are identical.
Hope you manage to sort it anyway.
Cheers Paul.

Have you checked the excellent wiring diagrams posted by "spend" on Friday? The speedo wiring is shown here:
http://tvr.dspen.com/Wiring_Diags/Chi
If the sensor only has two wires then I suspect you will need some form of amplifier to get the pulses to register at the speedo (assuming this wants 12v or 5v pulses). Getting your hands on an oscilloscope would be handy...
