Some 911 Advice
Discussion
Hi All,
I recently purchased my first 911... and love it, it's a 2000 996 and has been very well looked after - I've even had people come up to me and ask me if it was new!
Anyhow, there are a few small things I'd like to get checked which are concerning me slightly - the steering wheel creeks when I am turning it, not noticable when at speed but can be quite annoying when I am parking or such. A local non-porsche mechanic greased *something* which he said was a little dry (I'm not at all mechanical) which fixed it, but it is starting to come back now.. so I'd like to get it double checked and fixed - it's quite annoying.
Secondly, and I'm sure more common - my brakes are squeeking slightly - I imagine I need some new brake pads/discs but I'm quite concerned about the cost of these. Any ideas?
The car does have an extended warranty, which I am in the process of transfering and is up for renewal soon, I'm sure this wouldn't cover the brake pads though! (unfortunately)
Can anyone recommend a Porsche specialist in Essex? I live south east essex and the nearest Porsche dealer is in Colchester, which is about 45-50 mins away.
Thanks!

Hi jb2,
People probably didn't comment as your woes are pretty minimal... if you car just has a few small squeaks you are really quite lucky. Graunches or vibration from steering or brakes would be more noteworthy
You obviously have high standards, in which case, you need to find a technician (Porsche centre or independent) who appreciates this and puts things right. Pad squeal could be caused by different compounds, and is normal, or it could be other reasons. Effectively, you will have to get the pads checked and refitted, or replaced (whether with same or other compound). As long as the steering pump doesn't grind, then it probably just needs greasing etc. The grease may be being rubbed off by something, so get them to check for interference too.
These faults may be annoying but they are small, and technicians may feel guilty charging many hours labour trying to hunt the squeaks down when they have rear main seals to replace etc. Stress that they are important to you and that you will pay, then they should be fixed. Squeak fixing isn't what get techs out of bed in the morning, so you'll need to find one who cares as much as you do.

PS The faults you mention could be fixed at any garage, not necessarily a porsche one. Maybe ask a friend who they use and trust. For squeak fixes, any tech that is reasonably dedicated and helpful should be able to be used. Otherwise drive to the OPC and ask the techs if all 996s make the same noises from the same areas, and what could be done to fix. Forget warranties, these guys will probably help and slap some grease on if you explain the problem. Hardly worth them booking it in for, but they could do if pushed and then you could try and argue with the warranty company for the steering squeak later?
