4.2 Versus 4.5 or the Speed "6"...which one guys..?

Hi all

Just joined and loving all the info...I'm after a cerb but as a virgin to this particular marque I am not sure which one to go for. I've been told on the whole the 6 is a smoother car with a bit more "everdayness" about...i.e. u can use it daily if u want to...so I need ur help guys about which cerb is better...I love my grunt so I suppose I've answered my question in a way...and I also understand the V8's are a bit easier to sell on are they?...whats ur experiences and which one of the 3 engines is better...Thanx

Welcome Ronnie! All Cerbs are a bit mad, but it`s most important to get one that`s properly sorted. When you find one you like get it inspected by someone like Rob Ingleby Follow the threads for a few weeks and you`ll get loads of tips.

Appearently the s6 is easier to drive in traffic than the v8's, all engine types had their problems in the early days so whichever one you go for make sure they have been sorted. After frequenting the forum for a while it seems that the 4.5 seems to be the more bullet proof of the engines but i'm sure people will have other ideas.

ps if you go for a blue one with a cream interior then they are faster than the 3 above (oh no not another fastest colour thread )

If you're driving long distances, it's the Speed 6. On the track, 4.2 or 4.5, depending how fast you want to get to 100 mph.

Can anyone tell me why the S6 Cerb came about? was the Tuscan not enough for those who wanted a S6 engined car?

I thought the S6 started its life in the Cerb then was Stolen by all of the other newer models kinda used the cerb as a testbed?

first S6 car was a Cerb - Peter Wheeler used it as a test mule.
S6 cars are cheaper than AJPs.
S6 cars are harder to sell on.
The safest bet is a 4.5 in a safe colour eg blue with magnolia interior. Worth getting one with upgraded suspension and 18inch spiders. Personally I would go for standard lights.

Speed 6 has a more refined/relaxed nature compared to the AJP speed 8's. the V8's IMO are the pick of the range though but buy wisely and make sure it has been well looked after.
and don't forget to add a nice loud sports exhaust! (if it doesen't have one already!) almost invaluable on a Cerb!

I had the same question about three months ago and got the same answers- not so much the engine but the car matters (eg right one for you, well sorted, COMPLETE SERVICE HISTORY).
If you don´t have TVR experience but want extra peace of mind (but @ a price- probably around 1500 more then private) think of buying from a dealer (especially a well known indie like Fernhurst or James Agger) - just use the search function to check about their warranty and service. I bought @ Fernies in the end and did not regret it so far, Simon, Graham and Brian are top blokes. And to answer the colour question: if you want a fast one it has to be Atlantis Halcyon (I am also not at all biased). Enjoy looking around and make sure you have an empty stretch of road b4 you floor it on a test drive

Interesting - what extra peace of mind do you get from a dealer - for me I cant ever see that one. It is all much easier though.
For me I have only ever seen the worst condition Cerbs at dealers in this neck of the woods (south surrey etc) and so would only buy private. And pocket 3K saving for a rainy day.

Thanks for the posts fellas. Some interesting tips. I went to see a black with black leather cerb s6 today and it did look good...except the battery was flat and the drivers door would not open properly...didnt even get a chance to start it either....this combo looks great but I reckon the the starmist/halcyon blue with contrasting interior might be better....then again, I'm not that fussed about colour combos as long as the car is mechanically good with FSH ...etc

PS..this car is advertised on the autotrader at a dealer called oakwoodmotor company...i've put in a link...any thoughts from cerbites about this particular car would be appreciated www.oakwoodmotorcompany.com

I think all the spec is standard, sept for the spiders? Never seen a black interior before. Check the service history...

Very little between 4.2 and 4.5, I'd personally swerve the 4.0

The Lightweight Red Rose variant was only available in 4.5 though and IMHO thats the one to have, depending on budget of course.

Black n black is not what most want. Sounds cool but is very dull on the inside.
A S6 is a great car but you will want to ensure that it has a rebuild recently.
I would be very careful buying from a garage, particularly one that is a jack of all motors. You will want to check out the previous owners, history etc......

OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I do like the black on black, ive not seen that for a while. Tuscan seats on a 99 is that standard? Looks like a nice car but would need to see it in the flesh. It just goes to show how 'professional' some dealers are letting a cerb battery go flat to the point that you cant even fire it up!

Didnt realise that late 99 S6 cerbs had the later rear lights and the tuscan seats. I thought that the 4.5 lightweight was the first to get that treatment.
