Have come to the end of building a Tiger Cat E1 Kitcar and have booked an SVA test for the end of the month.

Am wondering what's the law regarding driving to the SVA Test centre as I have been told by some people it is legal to drive straight there and straight back, but a police officer on one of the other car forums I'm on said it must be taken on a trailer?
I have the V5 and Insurance Documents, driving licence, anything else needed?

Has anyone got an actual weblink to the info on driving to SVA as I can't find any info on this anywhere.

Definitely OK to drive there (just like an MOT), although I cannot point you to any evidence. Whether you should or not depends on how confident you are in your build... However, it can be useful to bed in your brakes, etc.

I have been stopped by the Police on the way back from SVA.
They are ignorant to the law in this respect.

You can drive to & from an SVA or MOT centre or to anywhere in the UK to carry out work for SVA/MOT purposes. You do need a full driving license and insurance for the vehicle registered on the chassis no.

It is advisable to book your journey in advance & have documentation of purchase of vehicle/kit with the chassis number on it.

However most insurance companies will only cover for a limited number of days without a registration document. So if your car fails SVA & you need to rebook, the wait for the next appointment plus the wait for the DVLA registration may take longer than the insurance cover allows. You may lose your insurance money (£250?). So a trailer may be a good idea.

Have all the above mentioned documents.

Ltd Insurance expires end of July. If it fails first time, will be cancelling and renewing when retest day is booked.

Can be a good idea driving to the test or it can go t*ts up. I decided to drive my car 80 miles to SVA and back. First attempt was aborted after only 5 miles when I noticed the yellow bonnet turn orange with the heat form the exhaust manifold. Rebooked the test and made it at the second attempt with no probs. As stated above you need to insure on the chassis number and you're then legal to drive it. When I SVA'd you needed a full tank of fuel for the test so make sure you fill up near the test station.
Good luck

It can be useful to book an MOT test prior to the SVA as its a good shakedown session for the car and it'll do no harm to let an MOT tester loose on your P&J first to spot any problems and possible fail areas. They should also let you set the headlights etc.

Its legal to drive to both a prebooked MOT and the SVA having first insured the car on the Vin number.

Its is also highly likely that you will get lost driving an unfamiliar car and have to take the long way home from both tests.

Even though you won't have any number plates I hope that you will make sure you slow down for any speed cameras you may encounter.

Cheers,

Tony

The Sva station is about 10 miles from where I live, I know where all the mobile cameras park up and the locations of all the stationery cameras, but will be keeping a steady pace.

As for the MOT part did book one, but after phonecalls to Vosa he was told he cannot give a Cert out without a registration. Still had the MOT done though, calling it a Pre MOT.

First the good news. It passed self-centreing on max toe-in without having to resort to washers to change the castor angle.

Now the fail points:-

1. Steering shaft universal joint bolt likely to strike O.S.F. suspension mount bracket - cure, shorten bolt.

2.More securing of wire under dash, n/s of engine and both sides of nose cone, i.e. indicator wiring. Irritating but no major problem.

3. Emissions outside of limits - our local garage will have to sort that one out for us.

4. Brake pipes likely to be affected by heat from exhaust manifold which is already exhaust wrapped. This refers to the two pipes which run from the fluid reservoir along the top chassis member. He suggested some sort of metal heatshield along with exhaust wrap to keep the brake fluid cool.

Will be sorting most of the above today, emissions next week, in order to get the retest ASAP.

doesn't sound too bad at all really, as you say just annoying bits more than anything.

Good luck with the re-test

Proof once again, that every chimp on the VOSA phone sings from a different song sheet. I got my import car MOT'd before SVA for peace of mind and to get the fog properly wired in. They can issue an MOT on the chassis number.

All sorted now retest booked for next Wed 12pm, garage told us that the emissions were in the legal range on their machine compared to the readout on the SVA test centre machine but have messed around with the distributor to lower the levels slightly.

A little BIG update, been a while BUT

Latest - all that is left now is the carpeting - leave that until next summer, wet weather gear is in position, OK in light rain, a nightmare in torrential rain as I found out on Sunday.

Have a new pair of mirrors just waiting for a day off work to install them, same as the MGA/ T one on the drivers side at the mo, except with convex glass.
