Huge Motogp crash

It was Checa that had a broken collar bone, I believe. He fell on his shoulder. I think I heard them say Melandri has hip and chest trauma. Time will tell....
Checa wasn't involved at all. Gibernau clipped Capirossi that knocked his brake lever on throwing him over the handlebars and taking him and Capirossi off, Capirossi's bike then hit Melandri's Honda which then hit Pedrosa's and Hopkin's bikes taking them off. Randy dePuniet's Kawasaki was also taken out by Gibernau's Ducati.
Hopkins, dePuniet and Pedrosa both took the restart. Gibernau has a broken collarbone. Capirossi and Melandri went off to hospital for checks, Capirossi with collarbone injuru and possible internal bleeding and Melandri with a broken collarbone and possible neck injury.
I was watching the Eurosport coverage and the news came direct from Randy Mamola who was able to check with Melandri's pit crew and the commentators who recieved official track updates.
Not sure if the BBC were on the ball as I didn't see their coverage.
Yeah that gnarled me out a bit. I still dont know whether it was Caparossi or Gibernau that went end over end. Commentary said Gibernau but seeing Loris come out the ambulance with his leathers torn to shreds on his right arm and shoulder, i thought it was him.
As much as accidents and stuff are cool to watch, seeing riders clearly badly hurt is really not pleasant - the way melandri got caught up was horrible. They showed a brief shot of him conscious on a stretcher but he must have some bad injuries.
Only goes to increase my respect for them tho - they risk it all.

Yes you're right, sorry, a momentary and atypical mental cock-up!

Sounds like bad news all round, but then these guys live with the knowledge and experience of the risks thoughout their careers and the ability to accept it just has to be part of their makeup.
Two observations.
Given the schedule of the series, does that give Rossi an easier opportunity to play catchup?
And what might it mean for the attendance at Donington? How many of the top riders might be out of action?

IIRC Nicky Hayden (who was either Championship leader or joint leader) finished 2nd to Rossi so he didn't make up too many points.
However Capirossi who was also at the top (or near) didn't score any points as did Melandri, so Rossi has moved up a few places, he has cut the points to 19 now but it's Hayden who is the one racking up the points in defence of Rossi.
1. NICKY HAYDEN REPSOL HONDA TEAM 119
2. LORIS CAPIROSSI DUCATI MARLBORO TEAM 99
3. VALENTINO ROSSI CAMEL YAMAHA TEAM 90
4. MARCO MELANDRI FORTUNA HONDA 89
5. DANI PEDROSA REPSOL HONDA TEAM 86

Ah, good point!
So instead of having a whole group of people who take points from each other and just have to be beaten, Rossi fionds himself in a sort of F1 type 2 people in it scenario where the points advantage of winning when your rival comes second is reduced.
On the other hand with these guys they are often only out of it for a couple of weeks even after serious injuries. (But then that is not always the case as the Isle of Man recently demonstrated.
)As I understand it, Capirossi has internal injuries/bleeing of some sort which is why they flew him to the hospital even though we saw him walking on TV. Melandri apparently has neck injuries, which seems pretty vague. I have no idea how he escaped and arm injury as photos (and Eurosport commentary) seem to suggest his arm was caught in Pedrosa's bike (http://images.motogp.com/multimedia2/ just look above the rear wheel on Pedrosa's honda)
Sete Gibernau has a broken collar bone and concussion. His ambulance also crashed (not a big one) on the way to the hospital. This is all from a friend of mine who works for Dunlop with the Tech3 team.
Capirossi suffered internal injuries last year after a crash at Phillip Island so I wouldn't be surprised if he was out of action for a couple of weeks. Not sure about the others, but I'd expect to have an update on motogp.com tomorrow.

I hope capirossi isnt out too long he's a fantastic rider and at last he seemes to have a bike capable of winning so to miss a few races would be terrible for his title chances with rossi back on fire. These bike racers will probably be back next week held together with bits of metal everywhere, compared to the footballers ive justwatched writing in agony after falling over on the grass

I don't know about that. It still looks reasonably close - and 19 points is nothing in GP... 1 DNF and it's gone.Capirossi is fit for Assen this Saturday (remember the race at Assen on the Saturday) but Gibernau is ruled out.
Sete Gibernau underwent a further brain scan today to rule out any possible complications ahead of Tuesday morning's operation to fix the minor fracture to his left collarbone he sustained during the accident. Surgeons will replace a plate inserted following an earlier accident with a larger plate. Only after the operation will it be possible to confirm when Gibernau can race again, but he will certainly miss the next round in the Netherlands.
No news yet as to whether Marco Melandri will be racing at Assen, free practice starts on Thursday.
If they do it's remarkable.
