Alternative expansion tanks.

Looks like am leaking. Trouble getting a replacement expansion tank and needing the car so has anyone fitted a non standard(????? I know) expansion tank? Seems they are getting a tad like rocking horse eggs.

Also, can anyone enlighten me to the difference to a bayonet type standard pressure cap and a screw on? Seems there are a few possibles but with the latter.

Cheers dicky. Sort of after a new one as I think a second hand one will suffer the same failure. Awaiting two calls for an original new then its orfski to the shiny side me thinks but never used ebay. Better measure the volume of mine to see if it is similar. What do Chimera's and Griffith and V8s and S etc use? Shirly they will be suitable?

Asked but no solution for me in the next few days postage allowing. Tried new ford parts, awaiting reply and TVR parts, again awaiting reply.

I have a printout from fords with the part number and price...... £23. Assuming its before vat. But since there are none left the price probably doesn't mean anything anymore.

Edited to add. More I think about it...... what does the swirl tank do on the later V8 cars? Just wondering if there is a worthwhile mod or peculiar to the cars they are fitted to?

I got a used one from Tick-Over in Essex, £15.

Alas that one sprang a (tiny at the moment) leak in the same place as the first one, so I've bought some sheet alloy and an alloy filler neck, guess what my next project is...

i used to stip 2.8 capris and still have 3 exspansion tanks spare if you are in birmingham at any time or wont to get one picked up by someone you can have one foc e mail me if you are intrested

When mine went I used one off a MKII escort, worked a treat in fact it used to de-gass a lot better than the old one as well

Size looks a tad small for a V8 in the cold light of the morning? 200mm by 60mm.
1 and 3/4 pints from my expansion tank at what I expect normal at cold. Not sure how much you need.

Who cares it's shiny it does state it can be used in conjunction with existing expansion tank.

Hmmm. The ones I am coming across have screw on caps Suppose there is no difference as far as the system is concerned?

Thought about that. But its in a spot where it is likely to go again or due to the age and it being contaminated it will probably blow out. Its tantalising as you can almost but not quite get the jubilee and hose over it. Just pulls back enough to weep again with no effort.

Anyhow, with help from Steve (and a very kind offer which meant I would get one either way) I have located a spare that is on its way.

There are a few after market generic alloy ones that appear to fit the bill and will fit in place of the old one with a little tinkering. Getting there. I think wedg1e has a good idea. I think I need to learn to weld. Could make a fortune..... maybe

I was going to take a leaf out of Steve Evans' book and fit the header either where the AFM is, or up by the windscreeen (it'd be a bit higher there, too)... moving the AFM so it's a straight hose run to the throttle . Bit like Jeff Morgan's, IIRC
