Right then.. the bonnet now flaps noisily at 90+, not a great deal of movement so it's not about to fly off, but an annoyance. I gather this isn't uncommon but what's the best way to stop it (without gaffer tape!), all the mountings seem fine as far as I can make out..

2nd annoyance is a tapping noise, coming from the front of the car, which occurs at lowish speeds and varies with speed. Not from engine/transmission as it continues in gear, out of gear, and with engine off. It stops when I depress the brake pedal, even so slightly that it's enough to take up slack without slowing. Also seems to subside at higher speeds (or is it just that I can't hear it!) and is intermittent, it disappeared altogether yesterday on a 115 mile drive. Also when it does occur, it seems worse on bumpy roads. Am guessing something is loose somewhere in the brake assembly but has anyone else had this? Odds on that if I take it into the dealer, it will choose that moment to temporarily heal itself! May or may not be related to grounding it a couple of times in Italy on what passes for minor "roads" over there!

thanks!!

Hi There, I see you have a facelift chimaera which normally cured the bonnet problem!! Check underneath at the front to see if you have the little splitter, its a black piece of metal about 2" wide going across the width of the front underneath. If thats missing that can contribute to an unstable bonnet. Has it always been like that? If not maybe the catch has moved a little and might just need a slight adjustment. As for your other noise, does sound brake related, so would get it checked asap. Even if you take the wheel off yourself and have a look, see if you can see anything loose.
cheers Rich

Look at the front brake pads
Fit a new set or look closely at the metal top and bottom
where it touches the caliper
Had a similar problem with them.

Also have a bonnet that moves and have often thought about a second catch on the other side as a failsafe.

For the brake noise, make sure the pad friction material has not debonded from the backing plate on one or more sides. Have seen this more than once now and it makes a 'clunk' on light applications of the brake (and feels a bit like a joint has gone etc). Hate to think of the safety implications.

Mine has the "wobbly bonnet" as well. Had the spolier refitted at the last service and this makes a big difference at motorway speeds but little difference at anything below 50ish. Unfortunately mine got progressively worse and the rattling was embarrassing trying to look cool driving throught the village! Apparently it is the Bonnet box which needs rebonding. Walldenway are fixing mine as I'm not very good with fibreglass! Should get it back this weekend

I had securing pins fitted to the trailing edge of the bonnet after it popped open at Bruntingthorpe. That sucker ain't going nowhere now...

thanks for the tips, I did already have a quick look at the pads and couldn't see anything amiss, but I didn't take the wheel off. Interestingly the pads & discs are new-ish having been fitted by a dealer in March (although I've done over 3000 miles since then) so given the possible safety issue I think I'll just take it into them. It also badly needs a respray, and I think the clutch is on its way out (42k miles, is that about right?) so including the £3k service it had in March, it's going to be an expensive year methinks

I'll check for a splitter - it's entirely possible that this came off in Italy

cheers!

Are the the flush really nice one or your std race car (through the bonnet and pin ones) - I might do the same. Do you think worth both side of just passengers as catch is doing its job up to a point and just getting hammered cos no passenger one? And would have an easier time with just on on passenger side?

Just the standard race car ones. I had both sides done - it would look a bit odd with only one, and doubtless the bl**dy bonnet would still pop open on the drivers side...
