Good news for anyone buying an '07 MY Boxster S, slightly less so if you've just bought an '06.....

Its only 15bhp. Fun down the pub when it comes to willy-waving statistics but in the real world the current car is great and the new one just a tiny little bit better...

When I changed 986S cars from a MY01 to a MY03 I really didn't notice the 8bhp power hike. I'll bet anyone with the Anniversary edition didn't notice the 266bhp change over my car either!

When I test drove the new car (which is brilliant) I have to say 260bhp vs 280bhp wasn't one of the improvements that stood out. In fact FAR more noticeable was the quite fabulous PASM and its ability to make crappy road surfaces into smooth tarmac at the touch of a button - an inspired feature! (Says he with 18" rims and rock hard suspension...)

Totally agree, the main benefit of the 987 over the 986 is the much better designed and finished interior.

What this does do is further undermine the value of a Cayman S IMHO

I was at a trackday the other day and they had Cayman S's and Boxster S's flying around. The Cayman sounded so dull, a soft rasp and metallically sound, where as the Boxster sounded much meatier. Does this no mean the Boxster will lose its great sound in favour of the Cayman. Oh dear.

I have to say thats what crossed my mind - the further devaluing of the Cayman S, especially with the new base Cayman coming out.

So we have:

Boxster S: 295bhp, £39k
Cayman: 240bhp, £37k
Cayman S: 295bhp: £44k

You'd have to REALLY want that coupe body for the extra £5k....

At least before the Boxster had the power defecit...

Also, last week i saw an '06 Boxster with a Cayman front bumper, which did look pretty damn good.

Just think, if you had the two cars at the exact same spec, you could add PCCB to the Boxster and theyd then cost the same...

Personally, i'd save the £5k, have a nice convertible roof and head down to Hayward & Scott and get their very tasty new Boxster exhaust. Should be good for that 5bhp to make the magic 300, and give it a very tasty noise....

Guys

I see loads of stuff about the Cayman S being £5K more and its a Coupe version. I love my Cayman for the simple facts of this: I can get 2 sets of golf clubs, 2 people and 2 over night bags (even 2 nights) in the car. Oh ok I cant take the roof down for the 2 sunny days we get each year in the UK but I can open my windows. Not a slagging of the boxster as I think it is an awesome looking car but we need to look at the other values of the Cayman S / Cayman.

Does this new upgrade for 07 devalue the Cayman S even more? No not at all. It is a totally different car and I for one love it........smiles for miles guarenteed and a classic design that lasts.

Personally I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Cayman S but couldn't justify buying a Cayman. I just don't get it.

Don't get me wrong, i've had a long weekend with ecurie25's Cayman S, and i fell in love with it. So nice, well balanced, amazing looking, fantastic.

I just worry that they're overcrowding their range. But then with the amount of money they make they can afford to do anything they want!

the cheapo 2.7 version of the cayman should solve it all!

Because in Europe, it's the UK that buys most of the 'top of the range' models in any car line up.

Here in Germany, you'll see mostly Boxster's as opposed to the Boxster S, Audi TT 180s not the 225. Same in France and Austria.

The culture is that you get 95% of the same car for much less than 95% of the purchase price. Performance isn't that different on the road either.

Also, people are more aware here that the margins the car manufactures make on 'go faster' models are huge compared to the model below which gives you almost as much. They don't believe in supporting the fat margins of th ecar manufacturers if they can avoid it

Basically, on the continent when soneone has a bit of cash they are very prudent on how they spend it. Not generally the same in the UK.

Don't get me wrong I've got a 2.7 Boxster myself and can certainly see the merits of the car - but - my understanding of the Cayman was a more focussed Boxster derivative with more power and even better(!) handling. The Cayman doesn't offer the extra power (5bhp) over the 2.7 Boxster but is more expensive. If paying sub £40K for a Porsche, I'd take the Boxster over the Cayman.

you having a giraffe? cheapo Cayman makes zero sense when the more powerful convertible is the same price

DJ - not having a go at Cayman per se as its probably a great car but the pricing is wrong, the only advantage that you listed over a Boxster is golf clubs (and I don't play). 2 days a year is nonsense. Had my hood 50% of the time I used the car summer or winter and its a great experience. Given the refinement of a modern soft top you must be very anti- them or love golf to want a Cayman IMHO - I'd get that new Box S every time

The Cayman is better looking, but this does undermine their price argument. If the Cayman was the same price as the equivalent Boxster it would all just about seem acceptable.

Cayman’s stiffer than the Boxster which makes it more focused, it drives/handles better too.

If you want to put the roof down, buy the Boxster, if you want the best handling Porsche buy the Cayman, you don't have to be ragging the nuts off it or on the track to notice the difference in two cars.

Both superb cars

So why is a 997 CAB (or any other manufacturers drop top version), more expensive? The hard tops handle better etc, but unlike the compromised Cayman are actually lighter and so faster, too.

Sorry, Porsche just killed the very marginal marketing genius behind the Cayman S, unless as said above it get's a similar power hike.

Just marketing, perceived to be a 'more desireable' car, hence commands a higher price. But quite rightly, why pay more to have less? (no roof)!!
