Just bought 320d SE, what should I be aware of?

Hi all,
As per the title, i've just acquired a 53 plate 320d and was wondering what things I should be especially aware of in terms of maintenance, general running and hidden costs etc?
Having had a quick look through the forum, I have picked up talk of blown turbos and inlet manifolds which has got me worried.
This is my first BMW and so what do I need to know about warranty and the like?

Yep, turbo's can go - but thats not to say that the 320d is prone to it - far from it. Its just that people expect a turbo on a diesel to last for a decade and 200,000 miles! What ever you do though - dont you pay for a replacement. Either get BMW to pay if you have a FSH, or get an indie to it (they charge around 1/2!).
But other than that they are pretty solid and nothing is a weak point. Electrics are pretty solid and rarely go wrong. So thats about it.

Thank you, I feel a lot more at ease now. Just covered 600miles in the past 2days and i'm really liking it, first BMW i've driven but I'm getting handy with the cruise control and the car is generally very relaxing to drive. One more question, approx. how much is left in the tank when the light comes on? I'm sure it says in the manual but haven't a chance to look yet.
Fixedwheelnut - yep I figured that one out already, took me 5mins though to work out how to open the damn fuel flap!
I heard that its not good for diesels to run out of diesels as it messes up the injectors or something?
About this chipping, I've come from Honda's which are considered to be pretty well tuned from the factory and so their equivalent chips are useless and potentially harmful to the engine. What's different with these? Are there safe gains in power/throttle response to be had?

DO IT.
YOu will get about 30bhp for less than 500 quid, which for a simple tuning mod is very good value.
The engines are bench-tested for way higher outputs, and then the power outputs are turned down so that the Co2 emisions and other numbers make the cars 'buyable' to fleet managers etc.
Put the car back to what how it was designed
Look at Superchips/DMS/others

1.8 gals in the petrol cars, I don't see why the Dervs would be any different... enough to get the best part of 100 miles with a very light right foot!
Been really enjoying my 320d (on a 53 plate) big time. Ive only had it 3 months been very suprised how much I can chuck it around the twisties. It is hugely practical and looks great in black. I payed 11.5k from a trader, it had 43,000 on clock. It had a new engine at circa 20,000 miles so not too concerened about turbo blow ups. Can see me getting a newer one next year maybe, it really is fab daily transport and keeps the miles of my CSL.

I've never yet driven a car fitted with a consumption readout that didnt turn in to an obsession!
Its not even purely tightfistedness, I just find its an interesting challenge I add to my journeys to stop me getting bored. Make decent pace and see how much fuel ecconomy I can squeeze out.
On a run in my mothers 320d (02 vintage) I managed to average just over 60mpg going for 250 miles on motorways and flowing A roads.
I have a 320d ES as a company car and once I'd got over the sulk of having a diesel, I'm extremely impressed with it. I get 46mpg on a run, 37mpg if I'm making progress cross country and it clocked a very easy 140+ on the Autobahn outside Berlin. Plus with the sports kit it handles beautifully too.
In 45k miles I've had two sets of brake pads and a clutch but I do wonder whether being a lease car helps dealers with their "should we replace it?" decision making?
The only down side is that it makes other cars I drive seem extremely cheap and rattly ... jesus, listen to me! I'll be chopping the griff for a Porsche next!!

I do feel the same way, I've only managed around 50mpg though so far but can do around 750miles on £52 diesel!
I think that trip was a rather special case as I was in no hurry at all and draughting everything on the road on the A-roads, only passing on the dual carriageway bits etc. Soon as I headed off for the hills from Inverness back via the ski centres it went down in to the 50's.
Oh how I wish I had bought my mothers 320d before she sold it. 750 miles to £52 is considerably better than my commute. All clear roads at steady 70mph, 260 miles to £40 petrol
