Hello,

I have come a long way since my last problem. Was haveing trouble adjusting the mixture on my standard 998 SU. Turns out the Needle and Jet was bent. Now I have changed it.

Anyway when I drive it, it runs fine. But I seem to get missfire when I drive up a hill in a high gear. Iv played around with the carb to get this far. Any ideas? Is it worth just buying a second hand carb straight of a working engine????

Has anyone got anything they want to donate???

Cheers

Ian

Ian -
All depends upon exactly what you're using, jet size, needle code, engine state of tune, filtration, timing etc - can be a really tricky job to get it all 100% - may be worth checking the vacuum advance is functioning correctly, failing that your carb may just be worn out or damaged from impact that bent both needle & jet - cheap spares litter ebay, however if you can't wait I have a couple of spare HS4's in good order (not exactly concours stuff but functional - i.e need a small clean up) both done less than 60K you're welcome to one for a couple of quid & postage (01934 876155 8pm+)

You really need to get your engine set up properly.

The needle and jet may/may not match, the needle may not be for a 998 a series, the carb could have wear in the spindles, the piston damper could not have oil in it, the piston might not be forming a good seal against the dash pot, or it might be binding, the entire carb could be out of tune.

The cheap solution is to get a carb of a running engine and swap it across, but I would then set the carb up properley and your timing, points, tappets and plug gaps and have the engine running properley.

Cheers Tim

I have your number. I am going to have another look at the weekend. If it all fails I will give you a call. All the timing, points leads etc are ok and have been changed for new ones.
