Hiya,

Anyone with any idea of how the Sky digital setup works? Having major problems and it's driving me round the bend. Here's some history:

1. Digibox refuses to receive signals from one transponder. Engineer comes out and replaces LNB/realigns dish.

2. Problem not fixed. Next engineer replaces digibox.

3. Problem still not fixed, and voilà! Now we have a decoder problem as well. Frozen screens. Next engineer replaces digibox and LNB, fits attenuator, realigns dish.

4. Now the digibox resets itself every 20 minutes or so, cutting off the satellite signal and requiring a full reset to get it working again.

Sky's take on all this is that they can only supply reconditioned digiboxes and they have no senior engineers who can come out and spend time diagnosing the problem(s) instead of just replacing bits of the system ad nauseam.

What should I do? Should I ask for anything specific, or just let them have one more go before sending them packing with a strongly worded letter?

Sounds good to me, you can always keep ing them but rather than speak nicely, then ring them again to make sure they've got your and you want something done about it AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

How about that?

Pwig, kicking it is a bad idea. Bits might fall off it and then Mr Sky will be cross.

Mm, that's the next move actually - I wheeled out Ms Assertive for a long chat with a Customer Services rep last night and essentially said that they have one more opportunity to put it right...

Can't quite see why they won't send out a senior engineer or a new unit as opposed to a recon one, though. Can't be good PR for them.

I sympathise totally with your sky problem. I changed over from analogue to digital two years ago. I have had nothing but problems with it since. The old system was good. I took out an insurance with sky when the new system arrived. They eventually took the machine away after about 3 months of me phoning and complaining that their engineers could not fix the problem (new LNB, realignment, new connector to the back of the digi box) were all tried in situ. The problems remained the same. Digi box lock up and picture freeze.

The company they employed to fix the machine were called 'Service Speed'. I neither received service nor speed from this company. They failed to meet appointments where I took days off from work so I could be available for them to take the machine.
When they did come they had always run out of digibox replacements which was part of the deal if the machine was removed.

As stated after 3 months of requests to sort this thing out, it was only after I wrote a letter terminating the agreement because there was no point me paying for a service I could not watch or enjoy and requesting a refund of 3 months subscrptions, that they took me seriously.

A month after that, I received notification on my bank statement that Sky Television had debited £239 from my account for the instalation of Sky Television
it turned out that the instalation charge was a fraud on my account and nothing to do with Sky but it did not help matters.

Digital Television is not as good as they make it out to be. I have found it unreliable and found that 'sky' are quite happy to take the money but not worry about the service they provide. If it wasn't for the kids I would probably bin the lot. I have already down graded the package to the family one from the full one.
I begrudged having to pay for a sports channel and then be expected to pay per view on top to watch a football match etc.
The film channels play the same dreary old stuff week after week and therefore after this saga with the equipment it had to go!

The equipment was taken away for 3 weeks and then re-installed. There are still certain channels I cannot watch because they continually lock up or freeze despite the equipment showing me that there is a full and strong signal on that channel. Fortunately this occurs on channels that I would not ordinarily watch anyway but the principle makes me pretty p1ssed off.

Wow - you've been so unlucky.

Our old digibox has been working (pretty) reliably for a couple of years now...

It occasionally seems to get its knickers in a twist (it IS a computer after all) and need a reboot. Other than that its fine.

I always say, though, that the test of a Company is what they do when it goes wrong. Looks like Sky failed big time.

Madcop, thanks for your feedback - glad to know I'm not the only one with this kind of problem!!

The essential difficulty seems to be a total disregard for subscribers. I had similar problems with the company in the old analogue days which resulted in me cancelling my subscrption. Now I still use analogue satellite for free-to-air European channels and have had no problems in years.

But Sky? So far they've sent three engineers from three different companies. The one I spoke to a couple of days ago just said that all he or any of his colleagues could do is keep replacing the boxes until they found one that worked.

Lucky I work from home, really, otherwise I'd have just dropped the whole thing by now...

Digital Television is not as good as they make it out to be. I have found it unreliable and found that 'sky' are quite happy to take the money but not worry about the service they provide.

This is what worries me. It takes at least two days from the logging of a call to them being able to get an engineer on site, then all the engineer does is replace equipment. I could do that myself!! But they make no attempt to diagnose the fault or rectify it, and as you say, in the meantime you pay lots of money for a service you can't use.

Nope, I think they have one more chance. Then if that doesn't work I'll just have to live without Floyd in the evenings...
