Last night my brother was driving my car through the Rotherhithe tunnel at 12am. As we came out of the tunnel, (he doesn't drive in the UK... not used to cameras etc) he stepped on the gas before I could tell him there was a camera and a 20mph limit and the camera on the OTHER SIDE of the road went off. There is only one camera there and it was facing the car.

I am not worried because I wasn't driving and my brother has an Indian licence. I certainly won't be getting points for it.

But out of interest, do I need to expect an NIP? And what do I do once I get it?

If it was a Gatso (square white flash) rather than a Truvelo (circular magenta coloured flash) then you won't get a NIP. The Gatso is only type approved for taking measurements of a vehicle going away from it, not towards it.

It's a yellow camera and the flash was definitely white. Many thanks...

Anyone know the camera I am talking about?

I know the camera well, live not to far from the tunnel.

There is supposed to be on the enterance on the other side fo the tunnel, but it was removed a few weeks ago.

You can set the GATSO's to read only vehicles travelling away from it, or only vehicles travelling towards it or both directions.

When they have "dummy" units installed ( internals that flash but have no camera parts ) then they are often set to "both ways" where as most of the time if they have the proper internals in them they only flash as you go past them - I am not sure that is law more just best practice.

Use it everyday (last 6.5 years) the southbound camera on the northern approach was removed months ago.

The camera heading northbound on the southern approach is a standard gatso so only takes photos from the rear of the vehicle.

There are some ppl sniffing around the southern side of the tunnel this week though, seems to be traffic survey or something like that.
They've setup a partially shielded video camera pointing about drivers head level on the northbound southern approach.
