Have recently seen a couple of 911s (new ones) with silver on black numberplates.

They look the dogs.

I know you're not supposed to have these on a pre 73 car, but anyone got any idea if they attract unwanted attention from the cops?

I know there's a guy on the S2000 forum that I moderate who has a "classic" plate like that - he's been running with it on for quite some time and hasn't had a problem.

Like with any "non-standard" plate that doesn't take the piss by trying to distort what it says, most Plod don't seem to be particularly concerned. Occasionally, you'll get an officious one who makes an issue out of it but they seem to be in a very small minority.

(The alternative is, I gather, to register the car in the Isle of Man Another S2000 owner on the same forum is a Manxman and has a similar style plate which is entirely legit under Manx law and so he can't be pulled when he comes onto the mainland....)

Off topic

Is your M5 the new shape one. A black M5 overtook me on the A1M a few weeks ago round about Ferrybridge, looked awesome. It had those plates on.

I was doing a certain number above 70mph that I won't type, and it went passed me like I was in reverse.

I have them on my car as well, Iv been pulled once by the police in the city fined £30 and told it had been recorded. I asked what was the worst they could do to me. They told me they could take the plates off me and then id have to get it trailored home. I thought that i wouldn't as i'd put the correct ones back on that are in the boot and then ill drive home.

Apart from this i was told that various cameras didnt pick the plate up as it non reflective. That the police car couldnt recognise it so if it was stolen they wouldnt even know. So i told the police guy that i thought that was a good idea so they would pull the person who stole it for having wrong plates getting my car back. He wasnt impressed. But they were both nice enough police enforcement agents.

its not big, its not clever but they do look good on a black car.

As a police officer, I can confirm that it's a £30 fine with no points - or you could face a summons. The DVLA can withdraw your right to display the plate (in case anyone is wondering, the plate always belongs to the DVLA) if you are a repeat offender.

My own personal view - and I must stress it is only that - is that if it's the correct font and size, your car is clearly well maintained, and you're driving sensibly, then I'll let it slide. Bigger fish to fry, and all that.

However, traffic officers may take a different view and give you a ticket. If you know someone in Guernsey you could register it there. As far as I know, they still have silver on black plates.

And very stylish they are too.

I thought the steering wheel cover was an amusing touch!! Really nice looking car, though I've not seen it around Leeds yet! I'll keep my eye out for it.

So if you don't run a personalised number plate (no plate to take away) the worse that can happen is £30 fine?

Big deal, just run the car with them. As long as they dont have any cack font or silly spacing I don't see the problem as old cars run them anyway.

er, no....I think what he meant was that the car would not be registered with any plate once they were removed. If you put them back on they would be illegal because they would not belong to the car from the time of removal by the police. You'd have to apply for a new set from DVLA and then change the V5 document etc. Loads of hassle me thinks and that's the point I suppose.
