Speed toward a camera (GATSO)
Discussion
I was driving towards a permenent GATSO camera when the thing flashed twice. I have been told that if the camera flashes when you are travelling towards it, you will not be nicked?
I have never heard of anyone being caught from a camera they were travelling towards, because the picture is an invasion of privacy, is this true?
Does anyone know of anyone who has been nicked in this way?

You are wrong. you can be captured from the front but it is not usual for Gatso to perform this way. Did you see if there were any calibration lines on your side of the road? was there anything going in the opposite direction?
Truvello cameras will get you both ways.
Speed detection cameras do not come within the sphere of the recent R.I.P.A. Act (regulation of investigatory powers act) where authority for surveilence has to be approved by either the Minister of state, Chief officers of Police or Superintendent of Police.
Because this is not covert surveilence and is visibile to eveyone, it does not come under the act and does not infringe your liberties any more than town centre CCTV does.
Any photographs are available to you on your request if you are captured and are not used for any subversive nature to ensnare you or deal with any other offence other than that of excess speed.
If you have someone elses wife in the passenger seat whom perhaps should not be there , then it is best not to request copies of such evidence to your home letter box

MC - I thought part of Gato's type approval was they had to be "set" to either forward or rearward facing.
Certainly there is a little switch in them (I've seen a picture of it on some site but can't find it at the moment) that sets which way they work.
Whilst a camera can take the ABS() of a speed reading (doppler effect means that you would be measuring a negative speed as you go towards them) it wouldn't be calibrated.
I've been flashed many a time going the other way, and never recieved a NIP. It's annoying I can't find the site that specifically shows the switch and calibration certificate, but it certainly needs to be "set" and calibrated to one way or the other (simple physics tells you that)....

There are both forward and rear facing cameras. The forward facing ones don't use a flash, I think they are IR based, and triggered from a road sensor.

Err - already been covered on here - but I can't find the link at the mo.
Suffice to say front number plates aren't likely to be introduced soon for bikes. They were actually banned from bikes for the simple reason that they "sliced" people up when a bike hit a person.

They wouldn't slice people up if they had to be attached aross the front forks in the manner of a plate attched to a car
When the camera flashed, there was a car coming the other way, but it was not over the calibration markers (It was behind the camera).
There were calibration marks on both sides of the road, but I thought the reason for putting markers on both sides of the road is to catch people overtaking/pulling over in order to speed past the camera

This sounds like a central island mounted camera that can be pointed either way after manual handling.
If the flash was in your face, I doubt it was you that was the target
City of London police are obviously not getting enough revenue from their Gatso units. On Friday January 31 I was driving eastbound in the Blackfriars underpass. At the exit two heads were peering into the underpass from behind a wall. This turned out to be two City of London police officers with a hand held radar gun. Nothing unusual except they were standing within 10 yards in front of a Gatso camera. Obviously trying to trap decelerating motorists.
Theres a camera that goes off as you face it in a town near Carmarthen.
Heard a rumour that the ones that do this are 'cheap/deterant' cameras, rather than ones that actually catch you. Though I doubt this and don't risk it.
But surely a Gatso that goes off in your face aswell as behind is seriously dangerous. Headlights are blinding enough, but bloody hell, two high power camera flashes could send you blind and make you crash into the nearest solid object! Are these devices trying to prevent accidents or cause them?

A camera on the other side of the road (country road)flashed at me as i came towards it. There are "the lines" on both sides of the white lines and i know its been there years. Ok i was a little too quick but i thought i had to be going away from it. I was following another car and it flashed 3 times ??
