Distributer cap contacts

Instde the cap, they shouldn't be brown should they? They should be a clean silvery metal colour shouldn't they? like when after I cleaned them?
Trouble is when I went to take a few leads out of the cap to clean them, the contacts stayed in the cap

You pulling on the lead, or the end cap? Pulling on the lead itself is liable to damage any lead.
