spotted going eastbound around j8/9 at 2pm today. dark blue 996 c4s lights flashing and sirens whaling... it seems the taxpayers money is being spent even more freely than even i had thought.

What a complete joke, there are many other cars that are half the price of a 996 that are just as quick. I'm sure the 'driving experience' shouldn't be one of the main criteria for spending our money on a patrol car.

They should stick to a Subaru or something else that provide better value for our money.

I'aware that there are one or two police chaps that read and post on here. I would love to hear their justification for such exuberance an the tax payers expense. Maybe they get the money to pay for these from the scameras.

Maybe they were given the car as a PR stunt????

I don't know for sure, but I would imagine that the police have outsourced the running of their fleets and it probably runs like other fleets/hire car firms and they buy them at huge discount, and flog them on at the point at which their market value hits the price they paid.

Just a guess!

Don't you just love the hipocrisy! One arm of the plod is busy spouting about "speed kills" and "discontinuing dangerous pursuits", and the other bunch of yobs are sat there in 996's and Impreza WRX's saying "Come and have a go if you think you're 'ard enough"!

Apparently the North Yorkshire Plod, lacking a Helicopter and having a bit of a biker herd on their patch, have even got a set of Honda Fireblades! I wonder what they think will happen if they encounter the kind of guy who won't just stop (which is the only kind against which quick vehicles have ANY use) and who's riding a Kwak ZX-12R Ninja? Well I'll tell you; 200mph on the A65 past Settle, that's what!

Perhaps it was the resale Police.

Someone had been a bit 'daring' with the colour choice on their 997 Turbo order.

I'm sure they're lent it by Porsche GB in Reading for PR and evaluation purposes. Certainly the kraut plod used to run 911s in Germany. In the UK they have a contract with Vauxhall for the fleet vehicles; anything else comes out of a special budget, will be for evaluation/PR or will be seized assets.

This relationship probably mean that the plod check the test route near Porsche Reading less often for speeding Porsches than they may do otherwise; I'm sure it works out all round and if the free 996 means they nab a joyrider or two, fair play. There won't be much to outrun a 996

I'm not sure the mobile blood service can stretch to a 996

I have knowledge of this (which unfortunately I can't share with you) but I can tell you quite categorically it was NOT funded by the taxpayer. Please don't jump to conclusions and use this as any old excuse to have a go at the police.

Was it Rhode Island where the police were allowed to keep a percentage of money confiscated from criminals. Had a fleet of sports cars and speedboats etc!

Ok then, as you asked nicely.

Do you know if the taxpayers paid for the Range Rovers that the West Yorkshire and Manchester police use for motorway patrols? Because it seems to me that it would be a little bit inefficient if they did.
