So..... there's an independant garage I know that maintains its fair share of weirdness and exotics..

I was there last week talking to a mechanic, who was fitting a 2.0 16v into a Mk II Golf. He was telling me about a (home-made?) 3-series BMW he was working on recently with a V8 in, and it reminded me of a car that has been discussed on PH.

So, mysterious 3-series V8 owner, was your car in a garage in the south west recently? Or are there more than one of these things?

On a related matter, didn't Alpina offer a V8 E36? Or am I mistaken?

Where my M3 is at the moment getting fettled, they are building an M3 GTR out of an E46 CSL shell and a M5 V8 tuned to over 450bhp, looks fantastic but is costing the owner around 100k to build.

IIRC Hartge (as is their style) do something similar, but slightly different. They do a version of the current 3-Series with an M5 engine, but it isn't the V8! It's the current M5 engine!

The car you are thinking of might be this one belonging to member Iguana.

I think it has actually been owned by at least four PHers.

Last seen in the hands of nutcase, but he seems to have got shot of it as well ....

Yeh old Kylie, dirty slaaaaag she is, we've all had a ride

Original engineering was bad, but its got improved along with each owner as shes changed hands & from what hes written on here the present chap has big plans for the old girl.

There are a few others around in the Uk, done by a few diferent folks- I know West did a couple, but all the proper Alpinas- except one I belive, are LHD.

I know an E30 with a v8 in it.

The car was owned by a real good mechanic from Oz, who was over here. He first of all converted an e30 XXX into a RHD M3, by addding all the proper panels, suspension and engine etc, 'cept it was rhd. It went well and he rallied it a bit on some single venue events.

He then decided he wanted more power, so he inserted a V8 and 6-speed box. This was a major operation. The fabrication was brilliant, especially where he had to custom make the exhaust manifolds in a very tight space.

He finished the car and it really looks a nice piece, it goes rather faaaaaaaaaaaast and sounds fantastic. It's finished in a Ford blue metallic.

Anyway he went home to Oz, and sold the car on. The new owner says the car is rather faaaaaaast, and a bit tricky without any traction control. I might add that the new owner is a pretty handy pedeler, so if H says it's fast and tricky, then I'm prepared believe that it is. The Blue E30 V8 is alive and kicking in between Oxford and Aylesbury.

Nothing to do with me, so I'm not going to be specific.
