Two recording questions
Ok.
First, can I record live music from an internet radio station directly onto a cd or dvd? Do I need special software?
Second.
Can I record sound only from a concert DVD, onto a cd?
Many thanks for your help, in advance.....
Better to save the music to HDD and then to CD, as the burning software likes to know the size of file it is burning in one session to disk and streaming it wont work. streaming audio or video is buffered into the computer and the file trashed as it is being used
Music DVD's tend to be protected against copying, seems the music companies learnt their lesson with mp3's
winamp has or had a mod called diskwriter that saves what is being played on winamp to the hard drive, you might find it good for educational purposes, search for below to get advice
winamp disk writer
I use Replay Radio, works very well. You can download it here www.applian.com/replay-radio/index.php I think you can have a free trial though it may have limitations

Well assuming that your using a subscription service to deliver the radio station (i.e. DI.FM preimium) and the Terms & Conditions allow for time shifting and personal use recordings then your good to go.
WinAmp + StreamRipper works a treat it'll save as either one massive file or as a collection of individual MP3 files based on track information. Nero and the like can then convert these to Audio CD's for you.
Obviously if they don't allow for such things don't do it... it's erm... well illegal.
Yoinking the audio off of a concert DVD. Yes it can be done and I belive doing it would be classed as fair use under (C) laws. Again read up double check and make sure before hand. And if I'm wrong and it is dodgy to do so in the UK someone let me know and I'll kill this portion of the post ok?
http://dspguru.doom9.net/ provides you with BeSweet which seems to be an all-in-one audio transcoder. It might well require a ripper to get the audio out of the DVD first before you can make it in to a CD.
A nose around Google also seems to provide a few links to commercial vendors selling products to do the same thing.
