M3 CSL or 996 GT3...
Discussion
so I hear you all groan and I did try to search this on the forum but did not find anything out!!
have had a really good offer through a private buyer on my 98 C2 (with all the GT3 trimmings) so am thinking about a change. the C2 has been great and I don't think I want to change to 4wd as I like them raw and pure.
the GT3 is a dream car but will it be too raw and nervous and unhabitable for every day use? well not every day but as good as.
The CSL is a great car, huge fun, more practical but could I live with it and would I feel like I am short changing myself? I really liked being in one for a few hours and it certainly had bags loads of grunt n grin factor.
plus they are 10k less too!
any 2c welcome!!

Ive had both..very similar cars to use for everyday use..however Gt3 feels more special..i would go for the csl for 20k less however..both not as good as they are cracked up to be ..why not buy a tt and get the real deal for the same money if you go for a gt3 at 50k....at 35k csl is the best

thanks guys and jesus magic that is some post! how the hell did I miss that!!
I think you might be right about cost and what you get for the buck. I was looking at a mk1 GT3 to be honest, even though there are a few around.
I have thought about a TT but drove a few during and back from le mans. Hugely fast car but feels detached as well as having huge bills to the bargain! mate has a chipped one and it goes like stink but feels not as hooked up as the 2wd version.
going out in the mk1 tom so keep you posted.

Just had a look on autotrader. I'd like a GT3, but I need 4 seats and a reasonable boot.
I'll be interested to hear how you get on, that is a seriously tempting price.

Eh!? You must be a hard man to please!
My GT3 is absolutely incredible, especially on track.. I could understand your comments if you were trying to do your shopping or transport a set of golf clubs around but if you use the car in the way its intended, its a very special and capable car.
Just my 2p

I know of a very special MkI clubsport with Manthey kit that is becoming available shortly... Its a beautiful car if you are looking for a MkI - have a look at Russell Tamplins profile (PH username Zanzibar).

The CSL is getting very tempting purely cos of the prices. you get a lot for your $$!!
Merrit, that looks like a nice car...but as it is a CS does it have following??
1. Cage?
2. Air Con?

As the original poster of this thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic. I'd have to say IMHO there is no contest.
A couple of other contributors mentioned the fact that the GT3 feels special.
There's a good reason for that...............it is special, and it's special in a way the M3 could never be (partially for me because I detested the SMG 'box)
One of the GT3s most endearing features is that it has layer upon layer of subtle handling nuances ( some may call them foibles ! ) to discover at every corner. (I had a huge sideways moment in mine last night
) I was shocked that the front gripped so well and the back slid so progressively ! To the Chav in the Saxo approaching the roundabout I was exiting, I must have looked like a driving God (I'm not
)
I drive mine 3 or 4 times a week and it still feels "an event"
The only change I could see in the future would be to a 996 GT3 RS.
However at the time I purchased my car this wasn't a realistic proposition financially.
The Turbo could be (and I'm sure for a lot of contributers to this Forum is ) an everyday car, it's user friendly refined and has all the mod cons needed in todays traffic conditions. The M3 CSL felt too much like my everyday car (an E46 3 Series) and not a special enough event to open the garage door to (or indeed sit in)
Apart from it not being "special" enough there are seemingly still (from a similar thread in the BMW forum) problems with the CSL clutch that have not been addressed by BMW GB and this was a further reason I walked away from ownership of what is undoubtedly a superb car that lacked that certain "Factor X" (for me anyway)

V8 M3 cab will have a folding hard top - that is going to attract a LOT of attention. Assuming that it is relatively stiff (as modern cabs are) - why buy a coupe?
Because i) it will be heavier, ii) you don't want to look like a hair dresser, iii) it's already a BMW - don't make it worse, iv) no cab has EVER had better driving dynamics than the roofed variant, v) it will be more expensive, vi) it will have less luggage space, vii) there's the Z4M Roadster and viii) most people don't live in California.
To name a few...
