Just got my car back together after filing and honing inlet ports, getting all inlet and exhaust tappets perfect, setting up cam timing and setting up the thottles perfectly. And finally rewelding exhaust to make it last a few more years and finally POR15'ing all the accessable frame.

Perfect, I thought.

Then trackcar goes and says, I set all my Cerbs up with a different cam timing to stock cos it gives more power at the top end.

Now at this point I should have laughed to myself, knowing my car was bloody near perfect and driven it out the garage. But NNOOOooooo. Lets have it super perfect I thought to myself.

Took it apart again and while resetting the cam noticed one of the tappits was 1 thou out. Couldn't stop myself from checking again could I. So, bugger it I thought a touch more filing and presto.

Only while taking teh cam off went and dropped on of the cam cap nuts. b**** ****** ***** ###### *****.

whole day spent seaching the floor, taking panels off, removing insulation, and even dropping exhaust manifold because I wouldn't let it beat me.

Long story short, car in little bits and no nut found. I need a scapegoat and you're it jools.

I dropped the nut off the end of the box spanner, it wouldn't have got to the magnetic tray , And I don't care about you lot laughing at me. When I'm finished the car will be perfect.

The cars going back together again today come hell or high water. Jools, any chance of you discussing how your clearances differ from normal and what differences this made, before I close the car.

Cos I have to decide whether to make the car standard perfect or jools perfect.

And to all you lot taking the piss, **** off . Lets get this conversation off me and onto something interesting like factory errors on setting clearances.

Seriously, for me being able to close this car and say I did it, and I made the top end of the car as perfect as it could be is AS much fun as putting my foot to the floor.

Julian. How long does it take you to reset the clearences/shims?

I ask as I'm keen to learn but would really apprectiate someone local showing me what to do.

I'd be interested too. Perhaps a 'clinic' one day in the future? (with coffee and bacon rolls )

Sounds like an excellent idea, but have you seen how much these private doctors charge per hour!

No problem. The shims require about an hour to take all the bodywork and hoses off. Ten mins to take the cam covers off, and about twenty minutes to acurately record all the gaps in eight cylinders.

About three hours to decide if you want to risk supporting the cam sprockets with a piece of wire, or as I did make a bit of kit as TVR suggest.

Another fifteen minutes to take one cam off. (twenty four hours if you drop a nut, although I now have a small stockpile of new ones )

Then another half an hour to acurately measure the shims of the side you've taken off and a quick addition and subtraction for each. shims are £3 a pop, or you can file and swap. I needed two for one side and four for the other I think.

About an hour to put the side back together and then swap to the other side.

The only problem of showing you is that I ain't taking it apart again for another 6K miles , and that if I show you how to do yours there will be a 24 hour hiatus when we realise we need a shim from TVR power, although as I say we do have six or seven spare here.

For all the joking on here about what dropping a nut means, well it doesn't mean much.

The cam cap nuts, if you drop them, can only drop into the top of the valve. prior to removing the top hat there is no problem. Or into the V of the engine, which has the possibility of interfering with the jackshaft, but in reality there is a pretty big gap below the jackshaft full of leaves etc anyway so unlike to be of any problem. Or, in my case down past the exhaust manifold on the outside of the engine, which is a nightmare to find but nothing for it to interfer with. You can't drop anything down the inlet ports as they would simply sit on the butterfly. It would require you to drop something down into the butterfly and then intentionally open the butterfly which would really rather have to be intentional.

The most dangerous part of the proceedure is removing the cam sproket bolts which I think people may be confusing this with. If you drop one of the cam sprocket bolts before removing it I suggest it would be unlikely to make it to your sump without first doing a fair amount of damage to a running engine, so it would be an engine dismantling job, or a keep your fingers crossed and pray when you pushed the button.

But again, and this is from someone who dropped a cam cap nut, its unlikely to could drop a sprocket bolt because you have the clamp in place under it.

Still cars purring like a kitten at the moment

If you were serious about a showthrough, I would show you on mine in about six months. Its a shame cos I started a video for people to take the mickey our of me, but it stopped after about ten mins when it became a faf to keep moving it and do the job at the same time.

I'm not laughing

I think it's great what you're doing and am planning on having a go myself sometime this summer.

Being practical must make owning a Cerbera much easier on the wallet but more importantly much more fun .

(simon) ok

(daftlad) yep 1 thou, most of mine were only 1-2 thou out. Its not that difficult to measure a single thou although it sounds it. I have a feeler gauge with 2-20 thou in it. You just keep feeding the next one up until it won't go anymore.
