I've done a search for this topic but speakers do change often, so...

I am upgrading my front door speakers which are currenty Pioneers that are 6"/16cm. Unfortunately most main speaker companies do not make 16cm speakers any more. Great! As the door trim will not allow for a 17cm speaker to be fitted, I am limited to any 16cm i can find. I'm sure that any Chim owner who is going to upgrade their speakers will find the same problem.

What I would like help with is what 16cm speaker should I buy? I know there are lots of you out there that think you are ICE experts! Trouble with this is that everyone's answer will be different. Oh well, I'm gratefull to anything right now.

I've looked up speakers on the web and there are a few around. The local stereo shop tried selling me some by a make called 'Kicker'. I haven't a clue what these are like, but apparently they are American and pretty good. They look awful but my old Pioneer grills fit over the top which is quite handy. I could go for this option but they are only 2 way and I was hoping for 3 way.

I'm looking to spend about £80, and for those in the know, would like a speaker equivalent to the 3 way Pioneer TS-E1796 (yellow cones).

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I managed to get 17cm speakers in the front door of the Griff.Twas a tight fit but a bit of pushing and shoving and in they went.Had to enlarge the hole a little but other than that ...no probs.

Get yourself down to halfords over the weekend and you can listen to 16 cm speakers on their audio displays. all the top brands have a model in the 16cm range so its more a question of what sounds you want and price, take a cd with you of something that you like and make your choice.

Thanks for your replies but I can vouch for the fact that most of the leading makes do not do 16cm ones. This includes the likes of Alpine, Pioneer, and Kenwood who do not.

Intersting because I've found these available:
Kenwood KFC-P707 component speaker main features:

160mm (6 1/2" two way component speaker package

Pioneer TS-E1675 2-way E-motion Series

Alpine Type R range also have a 6 1/2" speaker (thought they do say its 165 mm)

Hmm well you must have gone to some length to find those three. But talk about scraping the barrel, and it certainly is not helping the chap who started this thread. More like an "I'm right and your wrong!"

I have just looked up all of your suggested speakers and found that most are not available anymore, meaning that they are old models, and one could only be found on ebay! And one was about £30 which is not even worth considering.

I've just found some lovely JBL's which after alot of research seem to be the best of a limited number of 16cm ones available.

40-30.

I have been looking for new speakers and because I want to keep grills on the front of mine, the diameter of the speaker is quite crucial.

The ones I have found are JL Audio 600CXi, dimensions here http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_co

These are the only ones that seem like they will fit. I'm ordering some today.

Hi there!

Don´t go for 3way as 2way is usually better for the same monney anyway.
I would only go for a 3way system if it was an expensive component system.
JBLs are usually not bad or have a look at some Pyles.

Cheers Jens

Thanks,
Not too far really, I notice you have 6.5" JL audio's in your profile, do these fit ok, without too much fiddling? I'll only be running them of the head unit, that should be ok though shouldn't it?

You can run them off the head unit, but they will sound better with proper amlipification!
As far as i can remember they went in just fine, but the door cards are only thin fibreglass and easy to cut if nessersary! - It's worth lining the back of the door card with some Dynamat as this will improve the sound and help prevent the door vibrating!

When would you like to come and have a listen?

Would you not line the inside of the door skin too?

Thanks for your help.

The speakers may have to go on hold for the moment, I need all 4 driveshaft gaiters changed, they have started to perish, and one has split. I'd still like to have a listen though, so that I know what to get when I have the money for them. Are you going back home in July?
