Hi.

Im looking to buy a Geodesy Roadpilot plus Radar but wanted to check about the lack of Laser detector on them. I live in North Wales and we only have about 10 Gatso's but we do have very active "Arrive Alive" vans with a camera sticking out the back. Does anyone know if these vans use Laser or Radar or both??

Geodesy have told me that they mostly use a combination of the two so the radar detector would pick it up. I know that youre generally stuffed if you get lasered and would not have time to slow down but I would like the re-assurance that I may get a warning if im behind 3 other cars.

So my ending question is whether to get a Geodesy + Radar with no laser (apparently a Bell 975), (£795) or a Roadpilot + Bell966 + Laser (£495 + £500 ish) when the software for joining the two comes out.

I dont really want to get a laser blinder as I dont want to risk plod taking me to court for interfering with police business.

Any ideas or advice?

Thanks

Stu

Most of the vans are operated by civilians around here

Hi

Mobile units use radar (generally)
I would recommend the Road Angel though with a Bel 966 - and go for the blinder.

Road Angel are about to launch a new laser product, but you need to speak to them about it as I'm not sure when it's out.

Don't worry about the BLinder - I've had one for 2 years and never had an issue. The Road Angel has mobiel units as well and it's cheaper

You could try the Snooper S6-R Neo which is a radar/laser detector and GPS alert system.

re the S6r - I havent heard one good review of this yet from people who bought it.

This was the unit I was originally looking to buy but it seems a bit buggy at the moment.

Does anyone have one of these because I have ordered one, but the suppier cannot deliver for about two weeks..if they are crap, what would be a good all-in-one alternative?

I was interested in an S6R but was put off by what I read in an earlier thread. NickD did a pretty extensive write-up and ended up sending his back because neither the GPS or Radar/Laser features worked particularly well.

Ted - didn't you say you were reviewing one - any update?

The Road Angel all-in-one jobbie could be interesting ...

NickD did say that he may not have set it up correctly, and that his box may have been faulty. We're going to give the Snooper a go as a standard fitment to our company cars , as they have all the features (wait to see how well they work) for reasonable price.

Same problem as above, but when they finally arrive I'll let you know how they go.

I'm interested in the Snooper too. The radar/laser detector can be mounted out of site behind the radiator grill as a permanent installation. I like the idea of that for neatness and security. Looks like better value at £500 compared to the opposition. I'm really tempted - but could buy an Origin Blue i from Costco - they have them there for £295 at the moment instead of the RRP of £395. Please keep us updated if anyone has experience of the Snooper.

In my not-so-humble opinion any radar and laser detectors are USELESS against North Wales police Arrive Alive vans!

They use laser, mostly LTI 20/20. I got caught by one and have spent much time looking into it. The ONLY answer is a laser jammer and there's been much discussion about the legalities of them on this forum which you should research, anything else is a waste of money.

One of Ted's advertisers (sorry, can't remember who they were) test all the devices that they sell. One of the tests was can they pick up a laser aimed at a car / two cars in front. It appears that most can .

Not much good if you are the only person on the road though - afterall that is when you are most dangerous to others

re the legalities of Laser Jammers,

Ive heard that the people who drive and operate the talivans are civvies.

Anyone know if this is true for the Arrive Alive guys??

Ive gone for the Roadpilot with radar by the way which should alert me to many things but obviously not laser.

It should come tomorrow so ill post my opinions here after a few days if anyone is interested.

Where are these vans appearing in North Wales? I have to occasionally use the A55 over to Bangor and its always at the back of my mind that this road would be high on their list of 'priorities'.

Always good to hear of experiences with all of these devices as they are not cheap. Have to agree that with laser detectors, its down to how fast you are going, are you the only car etc - do you have enough time to slow down. Jammers may be better, if they work reliably.

You can check out www.arrivealive.org.uk where they have the routes and schedules.

According to the routes Ive browsed through they dont cover the A55 as they tend to hit more of the A roads that feed the A55. (Although dont hold me to this)

The schedule on the site is handy to print out but dont take it as read as Ive heard today that they may not be keeping to the scheduled sites for set days.

Im going to be monitoring their locations when I see them aginst the advertised schedule but they have got a get out as it says this on the schedule page;

> NB. Scheduled deployments are subject to change
> without prior notice

By saying..........

NB. Scheduled deployments are subject to change
without prior notice

......then the schedules are not worth the pixels it takes to display them. Just keep your eyes peeled for white vans over-looking the road. Including any that might catch you from behind.

These vans tend to park at the side of the road or on the grass verge in to get oncoming traffic on the same road. Never seen any on a bridge apart from before the scheme started when they were testing them (and still giving out NIPs whilst "testing")

I work in St David's park and have seen these vans in surrounding areas - including A55 and by RAF Sealand - they tend to favour nice, sunny days when road conditions are probably more dangerous. (?)
