I droped my Laptop a while ago, smashed the screen.
Got it fixed through insurance, started it up,then afteruse turn it to go to 'standby' then it goes to sleep, start up again (from sleep) then put it back to 'standby' after use and it just hangs/freeze, the screen is blue with Preparing to standby stuck on it, meaning i have to restart the comp.
I did send the laptop back to where it was supposed to be "fixed" and still didn't work.
Asked a mate who thinks it would be fine if i re-installed windows?

Any ideas?

cheers

Probably not related to the smashed screen IMO, usually caused by a dodgy driver. Hard to tell which one though. Sometimes there might be a clue in the event log, sometimes not.

Sounds like the drop might have damaged something else than just the screen. Can you check the hard disk for errors? Maybe it was writing to the drive when it was dropped? Was it turned on when dropped? Maybe worth while removing the HDD and memory, then reseating them.

Maybe if some one tells me how!

Maybe, it had a disk in it for Scalextric RMS, so may have been saving something.

Yes, sure was

On XP:
Double click 'My Computer', right click C: (or drive to be checked).
"Local Disk (C Properties" will appear.
Go to Tools.
"Error-Checking" and click "Check Now..." Select the two options (Automatically Fix file system errors & Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and click Start

If it's the primary boot drive Windows will wave two fingers at you and tell ya to reboot so it can perform the checks... meh. It's windows it'll give you the digit and say reboot anyways.
This WILL take a long time. Leave it pootling over night.

Bingo! Platters spinning and the heads weren't parked. Probably find you've got a nice collection of bad sectors on the disk. Hopefully not a growing number though

Personally I would scan the disk for errors and if it starts reporting bad sectors then it's time to invest in blank CD's/DVD's and backup everything you want to keep. As you'll need a new drive (bad sectors, even those generated by a one off event tend to grow over time). Tis easy to replace yourself with some screwdrivers or any reputable PC shop can do it.... tbh your local rent-a-geek might well do it for cost of parts and some decent beer if you ask.

Also no removing the Hard Drive from the laptop won't erase anything on it however if it is going bad it might tempt fate.

If nothing is reported by chkdisk as odd then I would backup anyway... let us know what if anything ya find.

Yes you want to tick them both, one tells the system to fix anything it finds (or try to) and the other tells it to look through the whole disk for errors.

Considering the way the system is behaving, backing up is probably a good idea but surface scanning and fixing file system errors is generally none-destructive.

Ok that's a good thing
Means that the drive is physically OK... so you've been really lucky. Considering it's only crashing when Windoes tries to standby and nowhere else (it's just going in to standby that's screwing up yes?) It's backup & reinstall XP time :-/ Give a repair install a whirl first and if not blast it and go from scratch.

I can't see it being the mother/logic board inside or anything else as they had the beastie apart to replace the screen. *Scratches head*
