My wife has announced we are spending Easter 2007 and the following couple of weeks in the South of France. I've never been south of Paris. Any comments on the best town to use as a base? Should we fly straight in or drive from Paris? Should I insist on Greece or Spain instead? Any comments welcome!

Another question while I'm at it. Which is the best car rental company if I want to hire a satnav unit with a car? The travel brochures I've seen are remarkably coy on the existence of such technology.

TIA

Been there lots of times & always enjoy it.

A lot depends on how many kids you are taking and how old they are.

If they are little then your best bet is a beach. The good hotels in Cannes (like the Martinez and the Carlton) have their own private beaches which are best. Be aware that many places along the Cote D'Azure do not have great beaches. Nice is a large town with all the associated problems of overcrowding, traffic etc. The old town is nice to visit though.

Monaco is very overrated IMHO.

If the kids are older then they might enjoy some of the sights e.g. Picasso Museum, Rothschild Villa etc. In any event, I suggest the 'Eyewitness' guide book of Provence & the Code D'Azur published by Doring Kindersley.

Depending on your budget I highly recommend any of The Leading Hotels of the World in the area:

Relais & Chateaux also have some lovely properties. Alternatively, if you're staying for a few weeks consider renting a villa or even a boat (allows you to move without unpacking).

There was a very good thread in General Gassing earlier in the week: try bumping it with your specific questions and you should get some good answers.
