T5 Gearbox input shaft play....

When I was inspecting the gearbox from my Cerb, I noticed that there was a few mm of lateral play in the input shaft, forward of the slave cylinder. Is this normal? There were no strange noises or rattles before I removed it, so just a bit concerned that the input bearings may have gone. It turns over very smoothly though. Sorry to post, but I've trawled the net and found nothing on this subject!!
When you say lateral , is it fore and aft along the axis of the shaft?
If so then it'd probably be best to have it rebuilt as the main bearings are taper rollers and need a small amount of preload to work properly ( ie no fore and aft movement) if you can rock it up and down ( 90° to the shaft axis) then this is acceptable

1mm is fine, its just a function of the way the box is designed as the input shaft is very short compared to the rest of the box ( it stops just inside the casing after 4th gear) and so isn't particularly well supported in that direction. Not that that is really a problem as wher would sideways load come from in use anyway?
When it goes back in don't use the 'reccommended' ATF as this is the main reason why 5th gear sh@gs itself, use a semi-synthetic 75-90W instead, the only drawback is that the synchro's won't work so well from cold
