A mate has a turbo diesel Golf GTi (I assume it's a MkIV). He managed to leave the lights on when parked at the airport, and came home to a flat battery. When the AA bloke was jump starting the car he noticed that a fuse had blown. There's a small case mounted on top of the battery that covers about half a dozen fuses on the leads directly coming off the positive terminal of the battery. I think it was the 4th from the left that had blown ... it was a 40 Amp fuse. Odd thing is that the blown fuse doesn't seem to have stopped anything working. Does anyone have any idea what that fuse is for?

Ah, yeah, heated rear window sounds like a good candidate.

Never heard of one of these blowing.
If its melted as opposed to blown then his colling fans won't be working properly.

Thanks a lot. That could well be the problem. I've rung him and described the air-con test.

p.s. what do you think the difference is between a fuse blowing and melting?

Its just where its been jump started and spiked the system , so the fuse has let go , just keep an eye on it as it might be another fault ,

Nope, fuse blown before jump start. When you try to excavate the battery terminals to connect the jump leads on these Golfs, you dig down past this little fuse box. The AA bloke noticed the fuse on the way in.
