What is a casualty ?
Discussion
The new favourite sign around here ' x Casualties in Y years next Z miles' . I was just wondering what defines a casualty ? Someone tripping over the kerb and hurting their toe (for example) or does it have to be KSI ?
Most curious is the sign on the road from Aylesbury to Buckingham. 1 Casualty in 3 years. Now to me that sign is telling everyone that this is a very safe piece of road and to keep the speed up ;-) . Consider - this is a major A road so over 3 years many hundreds of thousands of cars will have passed by 1 single casualty is a pretty good record.
Or do they really really mean that we should seriously consider 1 casualty in 3 years on a major A road to be a big issue worth spending money on ? I supposed we should be thankful that its still NSL and not been reduced to 40.

In theory, a "casualty" is anything from a slight injury upwards - although most statistics concentrate on KSI which are a more reliable comparator of different lengths of road.
1 accident in 3 years is nothing. (Well it's not, it's 1, obviously but you know what I mean). Without being blase about it, every road has an accident record, I've yet to find a bit that doesn't. 1 in 3 years isn't going to the top of the accident blackspot list, that's for sure.
