What BB speed do I have?
Discussion
Morning all,
I am with NTL and pay for the 2mb BB service, a few months ago I complained about the price being far greater than the competition and was told that the could not reduce it but would up my broadband speed to 10mb in the next few weeks if I stayed at the same price level.
I agreed to this but a few months on and it doesn't seem any faster.
Is there any way of checking how fast it is now?
Thanks for any help.
Greg

Not much of a reply, using google like that and u get lots of .com sites, who might be in the usa - just the thing for a uk tester to check connection...duh

Try this one - NTL often use it themselves:

My results today from my 10Mb line:

Shurely shome mishtake?
However, the Broadband Speed Test at adslguide.org.uk gave the following, much more realistic, result:
Downstream 9,454.2 Kbps ( = 9.2 Mbps )
Upstream 481.4 Kbps ( = 0.5 Mbps )
Which for 10Mb is pretty much bang on the money.
Now all I need to do is find out why my ping in BattleField 2 keeps rising from approx. 25 to 400 every time I try to play...

I complained that the price packages were too far apart with regards to the speed and cost per MB of bandwidth. I got a reply saying that 2MB has been increased to 4MB in the last couple of weeks and an upgrade from 2MB to 4MB was free of charge. Go onto the ntlworld.com site and click on the my account icon on the top of the page, this will give you the option to upgrade your speed.

Did you get this from a page refresh? If you browser caches the data, it simply retrieves it from the cache, hence the speed increase. Try pressing Ctrl + F5 and see if you get the realistic figure again.

Click Operation Configuration. That shows your speed, mine for example is:
Network Access : Enabled
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000 bps

Glad I found this post ! Griffin have upgraded me to ADSL MAX 8MB. But its still only giving me 2MB grrrr. Router shows 7712 down and 424 up BUT I have run every speed test mentioned here, they all come out at 2MB down - although I am getting the full 400+ up . Have emailed Griffin to tell them to take the limiter off the down pipe grrrrr

Nope. The cache was cleared out before doing the test, yet those are the results it gave. It did look rather good the first time when I didn't clear the cache though - it said my download speed was infinity kbits/sec...

Don't forget ADSL is a contened service, so you're still sharing that 8 Mrg with 50 ther users.
I've got NTL 10Meg, and it's pretty consistent but the only time I've maxed it out is Google software downloads and MS. Occasionally stuff that's obviously cached bt NTL, most of the time I'm faster than the rest of the internet.

I apreciate its contended but to get a consistent 2MB having run the tests several times each between 6PM and 1AM tells me theyve locked the data pipe down to 2MB even though the connection from me to BT is 8MB.
The answer I got from their tech support said ' BT wont allow us to raise any fault calls for 10 days due to ADSL MAX speed training' - my response - its not the ADSL training, Im getting nearly 8MB connection its the amount of data you are leeting me pass over it thats the problem
ah well 10 days will be up soon then I can kick them hard.
