Have been looking on other forums on P/H but now even more confused than ever.
Just looking for a detector that picks up all cameras including the mobile ones hidden inside unmarked vans.
I don't need Sat Nav - just a first class detection gizmo that warns me particularly of mobiles.
As a real numptie on this subject, understand that GPRS picks up the fixed cameras and if you have a laser detector also fitted, that should pick up the mobiles?? Do I also understand that radar cameras have almost disappeared so you don't really need radar detection?
Have shortlisted new Road Angel PLUS at £298 direct from Road Angel and Snooper Evolution at £149.50 from Snooper Direct (seems a bargain??). No doubt they are available cheaper elsewhere.
Any input gratefully received.
Thanks all.

As you say....GPRS units tell you of fixed cameras and mobile sites and traditional detectors pick up the radiation from the cameras themselves.

problem is...the traditional detectors are supposed to be being banned.

In my experience there's little point having a laser detector because by the time the laser has been picked up you will have been caught. You could jam the laser but this is illegal and the likely prosecution for having a jammer would far outweigh the donwside of 3pts and a £60 fine.

I uploaded a free list of fixed and mobile detector sites on to my TomTom SatNav and this seems to cover 95% of my needs i.e. it uses GPS data to warn you in advance of the sites most commonly used by mobile detectors. Thereafter just be extra careful in areas you are unfamiliar with. This also makes sense from a safety point of view.

Where do you get the latest camera maps from?

I got one of those too...like you say, when i use it, mainly on unfamiliar roads, it has not let me down.

It also warns of traffic light cameras and now, for a small fee, they offer an accident black spot & school warnings as well - havent taken them up on this offer but for those who would want it, it seems quite good.

I have the Road angel plus.... its really good !! You can also have the laser detector on or off so if they do become illegal you can turn it off. When, and if, they do become illegal you could always leave it on and accidentally push the button that turns it off after you realise you got spotted !! They do also pick the laser up before you get caught. I was doing 'a little over' the speed limit when it picked up a police car at the bottom of Whitwell hill on the A64 near Malton. The BMW in front carried on 'a little over' the limit and got caught.

That's an interesting approach - I'm not sure what the draft wording in the Bill says, but I'd be surprised if you could get yourself on the right side of the law by having a laser detector in the car which 'wasn't switched on, honest occifer'...

IIRC, it's the best against radar and laser, but not so good vis-a-vis static GATSOs as it's not GPS-based.

...if you've got something which is illegal and no good reason to have it, then I reckon you might be in some difficulties...

You've got to be joking! Do you think a construction company that had some asbestos stock that it had left over from the 1940s would be allowed to use it today because they 'purchased it when legal'?

Looks like there is small charge now for downloads but it is much cheaper than TomTom's own offering.

The Talex is meant to be good, won an award in a recent AutoExpress review. This is another cheap GPS solution.

A laser detector is next to useless, you have the time for the reflected laser to travel back to the mobile speed camera to slow down. I think this averages about 1/3 of a second. You'll be lucky if you touch the brake in this time. At most it lets you know you've been caught. The only hope is it will pick up the scatter from the car in front being targeted. Also nowadays ANPR seems to set these off, which can freak you out when travelling down the motorway.

As stated a laser diffuser is illegal to have operational on your car, however you can have them legally fitted as a garage door opener. So as long as it is one that disables itself after a few seconds of jamming and warning yourself you might be okay using it.

Radar detectors, although possibly soon to be banned for 'detecting police operations', do work well but most seem to detect every petrol station and supermarket you pass. In this country next to no mobile cameras use radar, so they will only pick up fixed gatsos which most do very well. Truvelos can only be detected via GPS.

I've always found this site useful and informative: www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/

The only guarantee not to be caught speeding is not to speed.

The AA 2006 Road Map has locations of fixed camera sites (at time of print).
Useful for checking an unfamiliar route BEFORE the journey.
Not so good for mobile camera sites!
However, the Safety Camera Partnerships (SCAMERAS) DO actually publish the locations of mobile camera sites.

Check the following website:
www.nationalsafetycameras.co.uk/nscl/links/links.html

Find your local area by scrolling down to "Safety Camera Area Partnerships".

Then on your local Safety Camera Partnership website either find the link for mobile sites weekly locations, or on some of the sites, click the link "Sign-up to receive mobile enforcement schedules by e-mail" for an email newsletter that gives dates and locations of mobile camera sites in your area.

Cheers
Andy

I have a Talex, and generally it's useful when on unfamiliar ground...but I feel that whilst a 500 yard warning of fixed cameras (Gatsos etc,.) is useful, a similar warning of a mobile on a motorway bridge is not when, I believe, their operating range is in excess of this.
I sent an email to Talex asking whether this distance could be increased, but recieved no response.

Thanks all for your input.
Reason I started looking at detectors was because I recently was "done" at 41mph in a 30mph limit (it was 40mph the week before!!!!) in the next village. It was 09.00hrs on a Sunday morning and I didn't even see the van. They had moved the 40mph sign 200 yards further out of the village the week before. After 15 years of driving along the same familiar road, figured I knew the score and maybe was too relaxed about looking out for moving speed limit signs.
I drive 30,000 miles per year and have done for many many years. The last speeding ticket I received was in 1980 despite driving Porsche, TVR etc, etc. So, I reckon I must be a careful driver.
Yes - technically I was speeding so paid the £60 and took the 3 points (no option really).
Not sure if I will buy a detector as I have never had one or even thought about one until this incident.

If they spent as much time catching criminals as they do hiding behind bus stops it might be safer country overall....

Speeding not actually being a criminal offence althought offering to avoid a court appearance in exchange for 60 quid and 3 points always felt like bribery to me.
