'The Cannonball' 2003
Get ready for some Cross continent fun in 2003!
Laterthis year 'The Cannonball' will take off once again from the UK for a crossEurope jolly and this year we're very proud to be sponsoring the event.
Scheduled for 12-18th October, one hundred cars will set off froma venue close to London on a seven-day and night unforgettable return adventureacross Europe.
To complete 'The Cannonball' each vehicle will have to cover no less than3500 miles via motorways, Mountain passes and coastal roads, through Spain,France, Portugal, Andorra and the UK.
Each day will bring it's own driving adventures and challenges. At the end ofeach challenge, top class hotels will be waiting where all entrants will dinetogether and regale tales of the day's events. Then it's a case of some shut-eyein the hotel or being swept into the best clubs in town.
How it Works
| Organiser of 'The Cannonball' Ian Whitehorn has a past closely linked to cars and Motor Sport. For ten years he worked at Santa Pod Raceway successfully promoting Drag Racing and car festivals including the famous 'Bug Jams' which attrached crowds of over 25,000! In 2001 Ian took part in the invite-only celebrity/society car rally 'Gumball 3000' and since then has created similar events open to all petrolheads. |
Only the organisers will know the route. The only information supplied toeach Cannonball team prior to the event, is where they will need to be and when.The start venue will be confirmed two weeks prior to the start date and detailsof a hotel close to the start venue will be given at the same time.
Each vehicle will then leave the start line at staggered times and will headoff on an epic trans European trip - one you won't forget.
'The Cannonball' is not a road race and there are no prizes for being first.That's not to say some spirited driving won't be enjoyed however as theorganisers have hired another famous motor racing circuit for their sole useduring the trip.

If they ran it as 'drive like buggery for the day, arrive about 5-6pm ish, party at the hotel, set off again at 10 am' - that sounds more like it!

As some one else remarked about being rushed from one place to another , with a time table to keep to ,to me there would be nothing worse than finding an interesting place only to not have the time to investigate it more , or if you feel like a day off to be able to take one, it seems like an expensive organised thrash to me , if i want a cross european thash i can organise it my self and chose who i do it with , i saw a couple of documentarys on the last one that went around the Baltics and back through Scandinavia , and wittnessed them coming through Copenhagen unfortunatly i passed them going in the other direction(not nice)if anything is going to make the "speed kills" thing worse it is this, and to be honest most of them looked and sounded like a bunch of idiots ,, so Nubbin in a nut shell there it is
As for not stopping to take in the sights then fine, it's not for you. But if you want a petrolheaded week of fun then the trip would appeal.
Shame you feel the need to criticise something that just isn't to your taste though.

The biggest difference between the Cannonball and the Gumball is indeed the fact that you are trying to stick to a "target average mph" rather than an all out race.
In reality, maintaining a 60mph average with 5 or 6 cars in a group (using PMR radios) with fuel/food/toilet stops is difficult. We tried to stick to 100mph through France and we were still several mph under the target.
Marki, it would have been lovely to stop at some of those places for significant time and this criticism was leveled at the organisers. That is one reason why this year things are going to be different, the organisers listened to what last years crews said and have made some changes as a result.
Perhaps if you'd said something sensible like this in the first place i would not have been so cutting with
my response.
One of the best things about the run was the amazing variety of cars and people involved - i made some friends who i'm sure most pistonheaders would get on with, enthusiastic car nuts who love a challenge as well as good scenery and great company.
Don't get me wrong, we did some stupid/irresponsible things and i think we were lucky to walk away with no casualties other than a couple of knackered Ferraris and some bruised egos, but all in all it was a fantastic life experience.
Anyways, does that clarify anything for you?

guys it`s just my opinion , i was not the first to cast a stone
