I'm thinking of getting a 900 Triumph Daytona or Speed Triple but it will be about 1995 as funds are limited.
Won't get much serious use - dry evening and weekend buzzes as I'm a old fart so I don't get out much ~ but I like a bike with a bit of character.
Anyone got any advice on these Old Trumpets
Cheers

They do sound like a bucket of bolts at idle, but have loads of character..... Something else I wish I hadn't sold....

Just sold a 1993 750 John Bloor Hinkley 3 cylinder Trident which was absolutely like new, 15,000 dry miles, engine was perfect, never missed a beat, no oil leaks, almost bulletproof...

Sold it for £1200, which was a joke, but that's all it was worth, the buyer got an absolute bargain....

Just make sure whatever you buy has a stamped up service record, even a worn chain can cost over £100 to replace.....

Funny you should say that but I have a 1995 Speed Triple in Orange which I'm getting rid of....... for about £1500

If you need any more info or pics, drop me an email.

Really, really don't want to sell but with the baby here, I can't spend any time out on rides etc and the wife gets really worried when I go out so I decided to sell it :-(

I'm on my fourth triple (3 speed triples and a sprint). Just remember that the daytona/speed triples have a long stretch to the bars and the foot pegs are set high and back. They are top heavy, especially with 25ltrs of fuel and do get dropped when stationary because of it.

Loads of character and not really for the short of leg.

Problems are generally few and far between as they were completely over-engineered, but do tend to blow the forkseals fairly regularly.

I've recently bought a 11,000 miler for £2200 on a T plate (last one registered!) for commuting into the docklands.

The colour of your bike is Fireball Orange and not Lucifer Orange as that came only the later 509 Speed triples.

900 Speed Triples only ever came in Daytona Yellow, Fireball Orange or Diablo Black - I know as I've owned one in each colour, anything else is not Factory original.

They are also available with 5speed gear box (Earliest) or 6speed(Later) version with different final drive ratios.

Cheers for the info Ian, sounds like your a real fan.
I've heard they are a bit top heavy and the fork seals are a weak point but the riding position is one I like - feel a bit cramped on some bikes.

To be honest, I've only ever had one bike blow a fork seal and that was a 1994 model which was repaired under warrantee and had been around the ring loads of times. It was used very hard and I managed to cover 30,000 miles on its first year, mainly going to and from the ring every weekend and the occasional trip to Bavaria to go paragliding.

Yep, it is Fireball Orange and is the 5 speed box, although I believe you can replace the 5 speed with a 6 if you want to.

I've owned a Black 1995 Speed Triple since 98, it now has 89,000kms on the clock and has spent 4 years in the Emirates, being ridden in 40 degree heat occasionally, it's part of the family. It's been around the Dubai Autodrome as well as commuted in Paris. I've moved back to France and it was the first thing out of the container. I would not sell it. Maybe I've been lucky, only a few batteries replaced and servicing, but apart from the engine noise at low revs, (balance shaft gear rattle) it's a great engine, and the clutch seems bomb proof. If your selling a clean one at 1500 quid it seems cheap to me. Last one I saw in Paris at the dealers was 4,000 Euro and it sold quickly.
Buy one and enjoy it.

I had an early one too - can't remember the exact year - think there is a pic of it in my profile? mine was an ex race one.

Top fun bike with bags of character.

Kitty,

yours was the later T509 version which are considereably different from the original Speed Triple. The only real problem I remember some of those had was weak frame welding around the headstock.

This is the original:-

Yep, I know mine wasn't the earliest triple, and also that it was a 509 but it was an early one.... (in relation to the current models) - the bloke I bought mine from at the end of his season also raced the one above.

cracking bikes though - still have a soft spot for them

yep, i'm on my 2nd of the more recent models (sssa)

well engineered, depending on year, there are few recalls, so ensure these are done. Only problems i've had with mine are a few battery changes but this was mainly put down to a failing rectifier.

its quite a heavy bike, so won't suit if you are little. But bags of torque, ideal for cross-continent, track days or playing in the Alps. looks different to your std common Blade etc. if you get one, buy the Triumph AM can. add's volumes to your ride!

Had my 2002 955i for five years and never missed a beat. It's a bit top heavy and needs heaving into the twisty bits, but has fantastic brakes and a most amazing soundtrack! Pops and crackles on the overrun, howls up to the rather short redline. Don't get to use it as much as I'd like now, but hope to never sell it. Takes Mrs Bombadier on the back too, with a couple of turns on the suspension you hardly notice a difference.
