Spoke to department of transport today ref. A628 and the 6 serious crashes on this road over the last 6 weeks. Opening statement from DofT = We are working on laying a new surface, painting new white lines and putting signs up to improve this road!!! I don't need to explain just how pointless that it. I was then asked for my views - 1) suggestion - replace the sections of deadly stone wall which keep getting demolished by proper safety barrier thus making road safer, crashes when they occur less life threatening, and remove the costly repairs of stone walls which close one lane for weeks on end 2) Suggestion - display what the delay is on the A628 on the overhead signs on the M60 which gives people the informed option of using the road - OH that's a good idea, but we don't look after the information signs on the M60!!! Arrrh.
I was prompted to phone the highways agency after last Monday sitting on the M67 for 2 hours before reaching the A628 and seeing standing traffic all along the road - so i turned round and came back - a 2 hour pointless journey - I did check the highway agency web site first, but it said present conditions were a 20 minute delay - when i asked why the web site didn't reflect the proper delay times... you guess it - it's a different department that look after the web site (insert whatever expletive you think suitable here)

Accidents are due to numpty driving, not the road itself. There are some fantastic corners and obviously you have to drive at 95% as pushing at 100% you go beyond the point of no return. I've had fantastic fun on the A628 when I used it daily for 3yrs.. early morning before 7.30am it is fine, after 1830 it is usually ok too. You just need a farily quick car with good drive out of the corners, to exploit the few overtaking opportunities.
