After recently taking the diff out and pulling out the two speedo wires by accident, i have reassembled it all and the speedo works up to about 50 mph then bounces up to 140 ( no nothing to do with my right foot!} then settles back to around 100,until you next hit the throttle when it goes off on one again,Any ideas please chaps?

Check the gap between the speedo sensor and the toothed wheel on the driveshaft.
Use feeler guages to set the gap to 8thou' and see if that makes any difference.
The gapping is fairly critical to the speedos operation.

I had exactly the same syptoms,
gap between sensor and toothed wheel was too large, re-adjusted and now all good.
