got scamered recently 97 on motorway
does anyone know likely outcome for 97? (i.e. 6 points, or need to take out a loan & hire a solicitor?!)

As far as I know the 'limit' for a fixed penalty is 96mph, so you might find yourself with a court appearance and either a short ban, a fine, some points (maybe 4, maybe 6) or if you're really unlucky all three!

Starting point for sentencing in a mag's court is 4-5 points / or short disqual (42 days).

You are on the cusp of what might be treated with a fixed penalty.

Good luck.

You may be OK with regard to a cort appearence. My g/f got scammed at 97 in a 70 on the A429 dual carriageway in Wales and got a standard 3pts and £60 fixed penalty.

Maybe it depends how busy the scammers are with fast speeders, perhaps if they get loads at above 100 they raise the court threshold, but if they don't get many fast ones they send everybody over 96 to court.

Not sure what points you'll get, but a ban is very unlikely - 30 mph over the limit is when they start looking at bans (no prizes for guessing how I know this ) so you'd need to be deeply unlucky and would have a chance on appeal anyway. Of course, if you hit the dreaded totting up figure then a ban it is.

I thought it was 100 up, ban. Anything below, fine and points (but 6 points for that speed)....

Either way though, why go above 85 in this day and age where speeding is the most heinous crime imaginable.

I got caught at 97 on the M56 about 5 years ago by a laser. Was not offered a fixed penalty, just a straight court summons - I pled guilty by post, the magistrates awarded me 4 points, £230 fine & £60 costs. Jolly nice of them

i've been caught twice doing 97mph on a dual carriage way, had to go to court for the first one (6 points £250 fine), second time was just given the standard fixed penalty notice.

No, it's 30 mph over the limit. Often people think 100 up because that's the speed at which a ban is likely if you're caught on the Motorway - 30 mph over 70. I think most who get banned for speeding in a single offence are over 100 on the Motorway, hence the figure you hear most often. Try 60 in a 30 zone if you really want proof

For completeness, it depends on the limit. The magistrates' starting point for sentencing (before aggravating and mitigating factors) will be 6pts or a short ban (56 days) and a level B fine ( for:-

21-30 over a 20-30 limit
26-35 over a 40-50 limit
31-40 over a 60-70 limit

This is accompanied by a level B fine (one week's wages) upto level 3 (£1000) or level 4 (£2,500) on M'ways.

Notice this is the *starting point*. Do it at night in the wet with a defective vehicle and no insurance and tell the mags to sod off, and you'll find yourself in a different world.

Which is a bit bonkers really. 100% over the speed limit in a built up area treated the same as 40% over the limit in an area designed for high speed traffic.

Of course if your 60 in a 30 is dangerous, then they could always press for that instead.
