I just use an ordinary common or garden box spanner, take the wires out of the plug and push them down the middle of the spanner. Takes an extra couple of minutes, but it's not something you need to do very often.
Mine have been in and out a few times just using an un-slotted 17mm deep socket. Dismantle the plug on the end of the Lambda cable and thread through the socket, then use a set of grips on the socket to undo. I did have to file a couple of 'flats' onto the outside of the socket for one which was very tight, but it saved cutting a slot in the socket...
